ill say this. if toronto doesnt give Alphaneuf 7 mill a season someone will.
there are many teams who would love to add another top pairing defenseman.
im sure a team like detroit would take a run at him if he was available considering they tried trading for bouwmeester.

People hate the Leafs. People hate Phaneuf. It's a bad combo and I can understand why many fans of other teams will make fun of the deal. But for Leaf fans that are moaning about the Phaneuf deal, get a clue.
- dionschenn

Problem is people only watch the leafs games. if they watched say nashville vs chicago they'd see weber is human, as are other teams top D men. You are exactly right with the hate for the leafs/phaneuf, and lots of leafs fans buy into it

just like the kessel deal was awful......every move the leafs make gets ripped

Letang is so one dimensional it's not funny, and makes more than Dion. Look at his numbers this year. Deharnais is in the press box, i could also add briere, but if you like the deharnais deal you may love the briere one. Marchand has been all but stapled to the bench this year and moved to the 3rd line. Bickell has clarkson like #s and clarkson gets ripped apart so i'd say it's a wash. Plekanec makes $5 mil. If bozak is bad at $4, plekanec is bad at $5

Not sure how a slash/hook makes that guy drop like a gunshot on a breakaway. Brutal!

You're exactly right. Both Weber and Phaneuf play against top line players only. Weber is a minus 12. Phaneuf is a plus 13.

My buddy saw Dion at a bar in the summer and Dion was absolutely smashed. He made a lot of quotable comments and one of them was that he believed if Weber played in Toronto and he played in Nashville, people's perception of him and Weber would swap. It's a bit of an absurd comment and Leaf haters would be all over me for saying this but I dont think Dion was so far off with his comment..

Worse than Luongo's? Not possible...
- SofaKingBored

Phaneuf's contract will end before Luongo, but not before Luongo starts receiving CDN pension.

that's why on this site it's so common for people to overvalue/undervalue leafs players then when there's a rumor ask "i haven't seen so and so play - is he any good?". It's laughable. Dion is offensive and defensive, which this team needs. That's why in TORONTO, he's better than alot of Dmen that only do one thing (letang, seabrook, etc) who may be considered better Dmen. If we had a different makeup of our D core, i agree there are better options than Phaneuf. But when he is logging every possible special teams minute, he's a good fit at that price.

People who constantly bash Phaneuf and his deal need to at least propose a reasonable alternative. Anybody who watches the Leafs and knows hockey understand what he brings to the team. It is obvious that guys like Gardiner, Reilly, Franson, etc absolutely cannot replace Phaneuf's minutes against top line players effectively.

If people are going to bash the deal then please propose what the Leafs should do instead. Trade for Shea Weber? Keeping Phaneuf makes sense.

resigning Dion long term is the best option by a long shot...
