Gardiner for MDZ make absolutely no sense what so ever.....Not gonna happen...Leafs might be targeting MDZ but it wont involve Gardiner..
- Fruitcakenipple

If the leafs trade for MDZ it will be for Franson....but it doesnt really make sense to do that either....kinda the same player.

Phaneuf isn't strictly an offensive defenseman. He's not completely useless like Gardiner and MDZ when he's not putting up points.

edit: Going forward Phaneuf's point totals will be closer to what he's putting up now than what he did in the past though.

- daeth

Also he's been trying to help the d actually play defense so he has been taking less risks which is going to affect his point total.

to be fair Nonis said he wants a top 6 forward, and the leafs currently have 8 D-men on the roster....

no.. its not

gardiner is liles at best once he matures.. which in fairness.. is a good reliable nhl d-man... subban is an all star norris trophy winning olympian (if not this time then next)

gardiner is nothing close to subban... nor will he ever be

Leaf players are either highly underrated or highly overrated, rarely are they seen for what they really are.

The Leafs needs a defensemen that has the ability to calm things down. A quarterback, a leader. Oops, did I say that out loud. Dion has NOT been that guy. But they need one.

Or stay at home D?
- iTOLDu

Yeah, that is obviously possible as well. Just don't think you see that nearly as often as the old F-for-D hockey trades.

I think the top 6 forward/center will be what Gardiner is a part of.

A top 2 shut-down D would probably include a player like Naz.

That's just my speculation, but I'm not cousins with the GM so what the (frank) do I know?

hmm he has 1 extra point this year, but less than 1/2 the points jake has in his career, despite playing more games. He must be a true shutdown guy, which is why
he is 5th among nucks D in ice time. He is right handed and from Toronto which is a bonus, but i'd expect the nucks to have to give up a lot more to get Gardiner.
If Morgan Rielly didnt show up this year, NO ONE would be talking about moving Gardiner. He was a force in the playoffs, is probably our best possesion D-man, and has nights where he is simply the best player on the ice. to me just not worth it for a guy who has hit a career high in points with 12 and games with 39, but hey im sure you can get a pile of nucks fans to disagree

- GardinerExpress

Tanev and Hamhuis have been the canucks # 1 pairing for about a month and a half. Tanev also sees little pp time. As i said your another guy who watches little games looks at the stats and tells people how good/bad guys are. How surprising

prob even worse than the Gardiner deal, because we give up a big RH shot who hits everything in sight, for another soft offensive LH shot

I don't know how everyone else feels, but I'm getting really tired of hearing Dreger speak. He went from reliable insider/trade breaker to town gossip since Nonis took the reigns.

(frank)ing sick of his daily meanderings.

I didnt like him on Sportsnet.....and Im not a fan of him now.

Overrated is Franson. Phaneuf is not overrated. Toughest minutes in the NHL and if anyone list 20 defenseman better than him in this league they're lying to themselves. Just my opinion.

I agree. 24/7 is showing me that Dion can't rally the troops like a real captain should be able to.

The big example for me was when he delivered his big locker room speech and couldn't even make eye contact with the team... Not to mention the first words out of his mouth "Like Lupes said..." Kinda shows where the real leadership lies

Guy had a string of decent games and now is worth Gardiner ++?
I don't know a lot about Tanev but I know a lot more about the potential of Gardiner. Gardiner is 2nd on our team in ice time and our leading possession guy among D-men..I know nucks fans have wanted him since the Kadri,Gardiner and a 1st for Lou days but it aint happenin. We are gonna keep him unless we can grab a big top 6 center or a guy who can pair up with Phaneuf (who has a better track record)

Exactly!
They need leadership....which is why they need to resign Bolland.
As I said in the other thread...if they sign Dion long term, they need to get a Dman who can play number one minutes to drop Dion to the two spot. Less pressure will help him play better.
Signing Dion tells me the leafs think they can go for it in the next 4 years...so they really need to go for it.....sell the kitchen sink and get a quality shut down top line Dman and a real number 1 center.
They will have to move Franson, Gardiner or Rielly to do so along with prospects of course.
