If we have gone about 40 years in mediocrity, what's another 7 plus years at 7 plus million?

The thing is, the guys who are "worth it" rarely hit free agency. When was the last time an elite level player become a UFA these days? More specifically, how often does it happen each year? Let Phaneuf walk and it could take years to find a player who is seen as an upgrade to him.

Also, to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Phaneuf is worth it. Like Kessel was worth it. It's good to be prudent and save some cash, but not at the expense of the best guys on your team.

Ive said it before, and Ill say it again, saving cap space is all well and good when and if you can find players worthy of spending those dollars on. Are there 4-6 guys primed to hit UFA status this July that we can get for cheaper who are as good or better than Phaneuf?

my entire point is not having a replacement is not a reason to overpay for someone.

what positives are you refering to? the fact he plays tough minutes against the toughest competition in the league? yeah, you're right.. and the leafs give up the most shots per game and are dropping in the standings like a stone in water. doesnt make it much of an argument really... not when you look at the entire picture.

You think Dion isnt that good, but give Ranger a free pass and has been playing solid while going up against 4th liners.

how you compare those two is baffling

ranger at 1 million as a bottom pairing guy: cast appropriately and has good value

phaneuf at 7 million as a top pairing guy: miscast in his role and overpaid for what he brings.

just cause the letter D appears beside both of them doesnt mean they have the same job.

i also have said if a better bottom pairing guy comes along.. dump ranger. but there hasnt been one to date that plays his game.

there are examples of guys around the league who take less than market value to stay with the team.

thats what a real leader does.

I agree, there are players who have done this. That said, those guys are often players who are playing on a team they won a Cup with or feel they can win a Cup with. Those players take less, to keep the core intact, so the team can continue to win cups or compete for Cups.

I agree, there are players who have done this. That said, those guys are often players who are playing on a team they won a Cup with or feel they can win a Cup with. Those players take less, to keep the core intact, so the team can continue to win cups or compete for Cups.
