Your forgetting Adam hall
- puckhead17

Adam Hall isn't a top nine forward, He's also what you might consider old and a UEFA at the end of the season.

Yes I like the downie trade too, not trumping Hartnell, but I'm done debating this,
Next year if kimmo retires, you have 3 scoring lines, 34 year old "broke back Vinny"
And a D that badly needs an upgrade.
But maybe we give Iginla 4 years $24 million

No it's a stupid comparison, 2 different players with different mileage on their bodies, different teams, different positions & different team roles.

The comparison is Briere, 2 years $8 million not a retirement nest egg contract like the one Vinny got

Actually we do need Lecavalier. We were very poor at the face off dot last season. Claude Giroux was the only player above 50 percent, which saw Giroux taking most of the draws. Lecavalier is a very good faceoff man, while Couturier is only now getting better. Brayden Schenn isn't very good defensively, so by moving him to the wing, he could focus more of his offensive abilities. I could argue Schenn slumping could have more to do with him playing center than anything else.
- Schenn2shine

I agree. I dont think that B. Schenn is ready for the Second Line Center role. He can play wing for now. For 4.5m Vinny is a great second liner. He has the best shot on the team. Basically it comes down to: are we a better team with him in the line up and can he sustain this level of play for roughly 3/4 years? I say he probably can.

Also before coming to play for the Flyers he had a reasonable injury history. No one could expect him to franking break his back or whatever.

To use David Clarkson's contract as a reason for why LeCavalier's is a good one, is kind of a weak argument imo.

The leafs have been run by morons for years.

Its like saying at least my pile of poop doesn't smell as bad as your pile of poop.

Vinny is a better player than Briere. So thats why he got longer term and more money.

How you feeling about our D?
Or better yet, how does it look in 2014?

- puckhead17

I'm certainly not thrilled with the D, they could use another mobile Dman for sure. Like I said, I don't like the Streit deal. As far as 14-15 goes, ask me in October, who knows what moves they will make between now and then.

agree with all of this except i think the jury is still out on streit. as a side, i take issue when people (not you) act as if the final year(s) of the contract trumps all else and forget to consider the here and now. I'd gladly take 3 strong seasons from streit for instance even if that means 1 bad season when he is 39. Or take the shea weber contract I would rather have 10 great years with weber now if thats what it will take to sign him even if it meant 4 bad years on the back end. jmo.
- moylander

I'm with you regarding contracts in general. I just think Streit's cap hit is too high for what he brings to the table. He's just not a player that I think will be an impact player at crunch time and for 5.25 mil per he should be.

My concerns with Vinny are two fold. He doesn't really help improve the speed factor on the team, which is a dire need. He can still be effective, but he is not the same player he was in that regard.

The other, is of course injuries.

Then add in Ryan Clowe and Briere and Filpulla and Weiss. All of them got a lot of money. You could easily argue more than they deserve. The Clarkson deal has to be added to all the others when you compare it to Vinny's. Maybe Vinny is a little overpaid but thats how Free Agency works and I would much rather have Vinny at our price than any of these other guys

Vinnie was signed to an under 35 deal and he's a class act. If in 2 years, his body is shot and he can't play, I'm pretty sure he would retire. At that point his cap hit would come completely off the books.

Thats understandable and I can agree with that. I dont think of him as the same player that put up 50 goals. But he still has that cannon of a shot that did. I think that is something the flyers needed. The Flyers dont have great shooters (probably the closest is Matt Read).

Please tell me where I said they would be handed to us. I think the Flyers have enough depth at forward to swing a deal for one puck moving dman and I believe another decent one can most likely be added through free agency.

I think Filpulla would have been a good addition instead of LeCavalier looking back. I'm not really knocking the signing of Vinny. I understand why it was made, but the risks with it are evident.

Its more so the length of that deal than anything else. As you say though, that's Free Agency, which itself has been an absolute headless chicken poop show the last few years.

By 15-16, top players will have cap hits of 9-12 million and good solid players (2nd line forwards, 2nd pair dmen) will have cap hits of 5-7 million. At that point VL's contract won't look bad at all.

Hartnell's still will though!
