Probably not, but he'll get one I'm sure. - MnGump
He's gonna get his 7 million over 7 years, if Nonis won't cave in then he'll definitely get it as a UFA. |

exactly. Leafs can let him walk without taking a step back. it's why teams have GMs. - DoubleDown
Again, who's available to take his role?
There are no UFAs at his level, which means giving up more for a replacement player. And you would be giving up more than you get for Phaneuf, simply because he's a UFA, and the guy we'd be getting wouldn't be.
It just doesn't make sense to move him, IMO. |

Sign Stastny, trade ROR to your bestest buddies in Vancouver, and sign Dion. |

Come February, will it be Stastny or ROR that will get moved, or will they just roll the dice (Stastny) and keep both and sort it out in the summer. |

There are some Phaneuf haters on here, I'm not one of them. That said, trade him, we can do just as poorly without him and perhaps better if we get any kind of return, and the $7 mill or so is better spent elsewhere. |

I'd take subban all day, 7 days a week. On the condition that Orr or McClaren beats his *ss the first day to smart'n his attitude up. - rSole
All the guy does is smile, but his attitude is horrible, i don't get it. Why do people hate happy? |

under rated player IMO ( only say that because all the hate he gets while actually playing well)
i would have no issue giving him a 5 year 5-6.5 mil contract with the rising cap... any more term or cap hit might be best to walk away if there is a capable replacement

I think they roll the dice wtih them after the deadline. Will qualify O'Reilly and try and work out an extension with him while trying to lock up Stastny too.
If Avs are still playoff bound by the deadline, moving 1 of them would harm our chances of making it, at this point highly unlikely they move in the season |

The unknown is just that, if he isn't resigned who can the Leafs get? Not to just replace him but make the D core better. So it's either Nonis has a plan to do this or he can't do it and has to resign Phaneuf.
The league is littered with overpaid players, bad contracts and it's necessary to compete. It's already been said, if he doesn't return then start the rebuild because the direction of the team has changed. |

Yeah, I think a trade at the draft is more likely, if one is even to be made. You gotta think the best asset management though would be to re-sign Stastny if you're not going to deal him at the TDL, because after that he's either gonna have to be re-signed or he'll walk so a trade with him isn't happening. |

The problem that Nonis has is that any of the four poll questions could absolutely be the right thing or the wrong thing to do.
Because no, just because someone else is going to give Dion Phaneuf a max contract doesn't mean you have to.
But yes, you assume the risk of losing the player for nothing, or the trade not working in your favor, should you decide to go without.
I have absolutely no idea what I would do if I were Dave Nonis. No idea at all. |

that's the rub.
I'd trade Kessel in a second for a cheaper version of Kessel.

GMs rarely make moves that make absolutely no sense at the time... unless we're talking Mike Milbury.
In the end, these guys have the job they need to do. A few GMs are hired to do a rebuild, but most are there to win the cup ASAP.
It's easy for us to say they should just move this player, or tank for that player, or whatever, but that's because our jobs aren't on the line... their's is. |
