Yes, the leafs should give him 7 years at 9 million. I only say that because they are a division rival and I'd love to see them flush that much cap room down the toilet. |

If he gets 6,5 again at 5 years he better sign ... no way a GM is that dumb and give this player that much money on 7 years ... |

Give your head a shake bud.
That is the only response you can give. Phaneuf isn't olympic caliber. Doesn't even belong in that discussion.
The guy is one of the dumbest NHLers in recent memory. I wonder if he could sustain a C average in high school shop class. Go (frank) yourself give me a real response and add to the conversation instead of being Phaneuf's equal. You can't say anything to deconstruct what I said. Your a typical low life average joe
edit: Phaneuf is god give your head a shake if you disagree. Clarkson isdabest amiright? |

Typical overrated Leafs player. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO - twpguy
pretty rich coming from a flyers fan who have a stable of overpaid d-men such as Timmonen(6M), Streit (5.5M), Meszaros (4M), Schenn (3.6M) (Thanks for JVR) and Grossman (3.5M)
Typical! |

Guess you didn't catch the Stl game....without Phaneuf, and with Gunner-Franson and Gardiner-Rielly as our top 4, we would be a lottery team. Phaneuf might not be worth 7mil, but our team is not exactly in the position to let him go for picks/ and or nothing - GardinerExpress
Send him back to Calgary. Try to acquire Byfuglien from the Jets. |

10 cm of snow in the city and it's completely shutdown. Vancouver is a ghost town tonight. |

Yes I have. I have the NHL package. I'm a hockey fan first, Team USA fan second, Kings fan third.
Have you watched any other team besides Toronto play?
If you have, you would agree with my assessment that most of the top playoff teams of a few years past have had a better #1 D than Phaneuf.
So again, for the 100th time, if Phaneuf is your #1 D (or any teams), they have a problem on D.
Never have I said that he sucks or anything close. Teams that win championships either have a great D (forwards included) or have a potent offense. Toronto has neither.
So again, last time I'll say it, my point is that Phaneuf would not be a #1 D on a championship caliber team unless you have a potent offense. - StayTunedMTC
There is nothing wrong with him as our teams go to guy on defense. It's his pairings that cause us problems; which leads me to believe you aren't actually "watching" the game, maybe spotting highlights here and there or catching the always fascinating commentary off of NBC or FOX.
Seriously though, if the Leafs could manage to bring in another solid defensive partner for him it would make a great improvement over our current roster. Oh and never playing Ranger or Fraser at the same time. (preferably never again...)

I have at least 10 defensemen better than Dion. And about 10 at the same level. PK and Dion should get fairly similar deals. But both will be greatly overpaid. Are they good players? Yes. Over valued yes. But they are extremely valuable to their teams. My guess is 7years, 6.5 average cap hit. But I would take Chara, Kieth, Weber, Doughty, Pietrangelo, Seabrook, Suter, Kronwall, Bouwmeester, Carlson (yes the one from WAS), McDonough, Girardi all before either of them. Then a coin flip when compared to the likes of Karlsson, O.E.L., Voynov, and Beauchemin between them. Few others i'm missing as well. But that's just one man's opinion. |

Is this a conversation about overpaid D-men, because if that is the case, you are spot on.

this..Dion is not the problem, the bottom pairing has been miserable all year with the combination of Rielly, Danger Ranger and Fraser. If we had another steady stay at home type to play with Rielly, we would be fine.
If we win Saturday, we catch Detroit and could move 6 points clear of the bubble teams chasing us, so not all doom and gloom |

fun stuff. One problem. None of those players are available for a straight up trade with Phaneuf.
Leafs need him, and won't get enough immediate help in return if they trade him...

Based on suply and demand, he's gonna get 7-8 million. Everyone who know anything about hockey knows that he's not worth that much, but letting him go for nothing makes no sense what so ever. Is he the best defenceman in yhe NHL?...not even close. Can they replace him with anyonebetter? No. The only thing thatbwe can hope for is that they negotiate a trade clause that it petformance based so they don't getbhandcuffed if he gets any worse...if not, they need to trade him at the dealine and try to kale a playoff run without him. |

It's hard to crack the lineup with 5 superstars ahead of you on the depth chart...Vancouver was wise not to deal Edler for that top 5 pick! |

I never said he was a bad player. He's obviously very good. But not great, and not a #1 on a typical looking cup contending team. He'll probably be overpaid and overtermed, but i guess the brass in Toronto will have to do it.
Again, my point is not to bad mouth him. Just that cup contending teams (not talking the Anaheims of the world, they don't have "playoff team" written on them, they're a regular season club) almost all have better #1's on D.
So, if he is your #1, your D has problems if you aren't an offensive juggernaut, which you're not.
It's not a slight at him, which is what you're taking it as.
It's a slight on your team as a whole if he is your #1 guy. Teams generally don't win the cup with a #1 like him if the team is not offensively superior. |

Phaneuf is not a top 20 dman but in toronto he is #1
Why he was on canadas long list no clue he would look foolish on big ice
Is nonis trades him great but losing him as a ufa would be stupid
Nonis will be critized either way
