Yeah, I think a trade at the draft is more likely, if one is even to be made. You gotta think the best asset management though would be to re-sign Stastny if you're not going to deal him at the TDL, because after that he's either gonna have to be re-signed or he'll walk so a trade with him isn't happening.
- Nucker101

I think Stastny will resign, he just got married, his wife is local, has some jewerelly store in Denver. I can see him taking a hometown discount to be on the team, they are finally winning and having fun, Im sure all of that combined can lure him back for cheap.

Again, who's available to take his role?

There are no UFAs at his level, which means giving up more for a replacement player. And you would be giving up more than you get for Phaneuf, simply because he's a UFA, and the guy we'd be getting wouldn't be.

It just doesn't make sense to move him, IMO.

i said in my initial post not to ask me that. reason being, if i had the answer to that, i'd be working for the Maple Leafs. for better or worse, it's Nonis's job to have a contingency plan. that's why he has 9 assistant GMs. my theory is simply that Phaneuf is not good enough to be irreplaceable.

you're over-simplfying this in my estimation. it's not only about "is there anyone readily available to replace him?" it's also about whether or not you want to build your defence around him for the next decade.

Gorges + Gallagher + 1st for ROR

I'm trying to get into the spirit of hockeybuzz and make some big trades not paying Phaneuf all that money also opens up cash for another winger to replace JVR

Sorry I always read this site kind of baked it's more fun

He's worth $5 million under the current cap.

Which means he'll be worth $7 million when the cap goes $70 mill+

Sign him for 6 years $42 mill. In the end, it works.

I think you're oversimplifying by just saying "they'll figure it out".

And yea, I feel he's good enough to build the defense around. In building the defense, the Leafs should be looking at who they should bring in to play with him, rather than who they can replace him with.

I don't think he's irreplaceable. But I think the find someone at his level or higher, it's going to cost us a lot in assets, and could easily wind up costing us more in cap in the future.

Unless we can trade him for a very good #1 C, or another #1 D, there's no point in trading him, IMO.

It's a tough call. Getting past the Leaf hate and such, it really is a difficult decision for Nonis to make. As it stands no one on the roster or seriously available out there can replace Phaneuf. In the short term that's a serious loss on the blueline. Now the Leafs have drafted a lot of D over the past few years and maybe that will make up for the loss eventually.

Will be 29 this summer which isn't super old. Of course throw seven or eight years and obviously you can question how effective he'll be near the end of it. Phaneuf has his weak points, but he's also got strengths and has definitely become an effective guy at dealing with top offensive players.

As expected it will be a judgment call of whether as Captain he can lead this team anywhere and whether it's worth adding more cap to him personally (though if it ends up around 7 million it's not a huge raise). Making a trade could be tough with the cap situation everywhere, but if it's a futures focused trade the Leafs could retain some of the cap hit (since it's an expiring contract that's not a big deal).

To be fair a lot of regurgitating the obvious, but yeah I still don't know what's the best move. Not sure if they'll get far with Phaneuf, but it'd be a step back to lose him and I am pretty tired of the team never getting anywhere.

Phaneuf is a top pairing dman. I'm okay with the leafs keeping him for whatever they deem necessary. But only as long as they strive to improve the team.

Losing him to free agency would be dumb, keeping him and not strengtening the dcorps would also be dumb.

He isn't a stud on the point but he is solid. Surround him with some improvements to help his chances.

Maybe the habs would be willing to take gardiner for tinordi. There could be some more involved. But the leafs could use a future horse that can eat minutes.
