Not really for the college level. The new feature rink isn't even supposed to seat 2,000. It's still going to be too small for anything really big.

What I dont understand is everyone says Bufalo has a "college atmosphere" to it, yet we fail to adopt any of the good college teams. (See UB football, NU hockey)

I didnt go to school in Buffalo and in now way have a College Atmosphere to it at all. Id say if someoen says that they havent been to a real college place before.

I dont think Cincy has a good college atmosphere and its 10x more college town then buffalo.

Agreed! Unfortunately these teams play in the Atlantic Hockey Conference and while last year was the first year that 2 teams made the NCAA tournament they will always be treated as the red headed step child conference. If they add to their scholarship totals to the same levels as Hockey East, ECAC, or the Big Ten it would help their case. RIT is building a new arena that will seat between 4000-6000 fans which will be the biggest arena in the Atlantic League.

The Atlantic League has some good teams (I know I ref that conference) but they don't get the respect from the bigger schools.

UB dropped the ball if you ask me. They had plans to build an ice rink on campus a few years ago and decided against it. It is going to take a generous donation from an alumnus(looking at you Mr Jacobs) for them to start a D 1 program and to start it the right way like Penn State did

You forgot about canisius hockey and basketball, there is a college atmosphere in some parts of town like elmwood. Not much though to be honest. I go to canisius now and I commute simply because there isn't much to do around town.

There were never really any concrete "plans" for that rink though. I believe Warde Manuel looked into it (as in he kind of kicked the tires, just to see what it would take), but nothing ever really materialized. Then he got hired as UConn's AD. I would have liked to see it happen too, but to say that they dropped the ball because they abandoned plans to build a rink is a little unfair. It never really got to the point of "we're going to do this". It was more of a "what if" scenario.

EDIT: I agree about the alumnus thing. The SUNY system might be one of the most tight-waded public educational systems in the country, especially when it comes to athletics. UB sounds like a great idea for a team in theory, but they really aren't in practice. All the money is going to have to come privately.

There was more to it than that. The plans were more than just kicking the tires. This dates back even before the Manuel days as well. They have the plans to start the program but backed out a few times.

UB football hasn't been good enough for a long enough period of time. One good season every once in a while isn't going to get people to grab on. You need years of constant winning. You need to build a winning tradition in order to get people to really catch on. The same goes for Niagara Hockey. They would essentially need to be a perennial Frozen Four contender, especially because they play in Niagara Falls, which is out of the way for a lot of people.

I don't know about before that, but Warde Manuel was hired while I was at school there. By the time I graduated in 2008, there were reports that he was doing some research on building a hockey program, but never made any sort of commitment to it. As I said, while UB might make sense area wise, and even student population wise, it's handcuffed by the SUNY system, that really doesn't care all that much about its presence in the Buffalo area. It's completely content with UB's status as a research university. Athletics are just a bonus.

Until they realize how much money good athletic programs can generate. Considering that is all it seems to be about at the current time with college sports.

We're talking about New York State here. They don't figure things like this out.

I'm hoping with this new forward thinking regime that NYS has can "figure it out"

I think a major sports problem in this area is how draining the Bills have been. That trickles down to everywhere else sports wise.

The problem with everything in this area is how draining NYC is on the rest of the state. If you aren't in NYC you are a second rate NYS resident
