they have always been so quick to send despres back down for some reason. i understand its a numbers game, but man that kid has it. he is huge and mobile. his time working on his shut down game in the AHL this season has helped a lot too. i do whatever you have to do to keep him in the lineup at the pro level. he is ready. although at this rate, the veteran top 4 will never see the ice at the same time anyway.

and jagr, now that is a can of worms. it be cool to see him with the pens again. he was probably the main reason i got into them as a kid. he made some otherwise eh seasons worth following. but still, im really leery about moving assets for rentals, legend or not. besides i dont know how much he would actually help with what typically plagues the pens in the spring

- stayinthefnnet

How about this for a nightmare scenario. Pens sign Tim Thomas as an insurance policy to MAF, and then both goalies have full mental breakdowns of Leightonesque proportions to blow the playoffs.

Damn that would be crazy.

that term makes a huge difference when compared to hartnells
- stayinthefnnet

Alex Steen is being paid $1mil more a year than a player that has had 2 30 goal seasons based on a 33 game sample size.

Sorry, but if Paul Holmgren gives out that contract, he's getting killed today.

Perception is a female dog sometimes.

Not at all.

Alex Steen has never scored more than 24 goals and that was 4 seasons ago.

Hartnell has 2 30-goal seasons and been a pretty consistent 20 goal scorer in his stint with the Flyers.

- johndewar

Given their age and one of them is a late bloomer on the upswing and the other seems to be in the decline, I see it as a no brainier.

Not arguing that Hartnell over his career was a better bet, just looking at their current contracts. Steen by a mile.

I think if Homer did that same deal I'd say the same thing, I like the term a lot.
I'd rather pay a million more for 3 years then stretch the length till the guy becomes obsolete because of age or injury.

The idea that Schenn is playing tonight is pretty scary to me.
Just seems very cavalier given the risks and history this team has with head injuries.

Laughton for Maata. Call Shero. I'll call Homer. Get it done.

Are you saying no, you wouldn't do it, or no, the Penguins wouldn't. Because if Pittsburgh seriously offered that, you take it 9 days a week.

A C might be generous. For each of these moves, give me the good one to counter.

Trading draft picks for a washed up Pavel Kubina
Signing a well past his prime Timonen to a 6 million dollar deal
Trading JVR for Luke Schenn
Signing Streit at 35 to a 4 year deal

- PLindbergh31

Was actually a good thing because it meant they didn't have the cap space to sign Cleary. Also Kimmo has been pretty good apart from making too many flubs and bad decisions on the Powerplay.

He makes more money that Scott Hartnell by about $1mil per year.

Would you trade Scott Hartnell for Alex Steen?

- johndewar

Are you kidding? Of course. Steen is also a great defensive forward and is only signed for three more years while Hartnell is signed for five more.

Laughton has a very good NHL upside. But I see him as another Couturier, maybe slightly more physical but not as good defensively. Matta has top pair defenseman written all over him.

neither of those players will come close to either francis or lidstrom. that being said, my man crush on maatta is pretty freakin high
- stayinthefnnet

I really think either one could be as good as some consider them. Of course there are those that overblow it, but that doesn't make everybody with an ounce of optimism as stupid as their most blind fanboy.

I'm just picking on the Maatta thing because it's literally what Oneonta accuses all Flyers fans of doing with Couturier (based one something one guy ever said to him once). I really don't think he watches any Flyers games at all (not that I expect Pens fans to follow closely).

I'd be a lot more on board with it if they had just done the damn initial tests.

I'm pretty sure they did examine him thoroughly after that hit.

I'm also certain he suffered a traumatic brain injury from watching it.

So he doesn't have concussion symptoms today, that is great.

I still think he should sit out tonight, given the serious consequences and the fact that concussion symptoms can be delayed, but whatever.

Agreed here. Crosby apparently felt fine after the Winter Classic, then took a little nothing hit against TB and was out for most of a year. Give him tonight off and be safe.

Then again, Rosehill...

Acquiring Timonen (and Hartnell) for a first rounder you had just acquired as part of a good package.
Acquiring Coburn for Zhitnik
Acquiring Grossmann for a 2nd (and a 3rd?) (debatable)
Signing Gustafsson.
Acquiring Malk Alt + Boucher for Luke Pither.
Sam Morin punches people's faces.

Edit:
Drafting Sbisa
Trading for Pronger (debatable)

- jmatchett383

trading for Mason
signing Read out of college, and his nice re-up
Carter for Voracek and Couturier

A more physical Couturier would be really great.

Couts is a special player already.
If Laughton can be like that it is good for the Flyers.

I'd love to have Maatta though, given their needs to rebuild the D.

That's the thing. He's 19, and he's already a full-time top-4 defenseman. Laughton has yet to play 6 NHL games. I'm high on Laughton, but given the choice, I'd take Maatta right now.

Then it's a good thing we didn't get that Carlson guy in the draft.
Even Simmonds can nutmeg that fraud.

I knew I liked you for a reason. For me, clinging blindly to an incorrect statement in the face of conclusive, disputing facts is the hallmark of a true friend.
