How many goalies are on the WJC rosters? is it definite that Stolartz is on the squad?

I was talking this offseason. July 2013. I think the majority want Hextall elevated to GM yesterday.
- PLindbergh31

It depends on what direction ownership wants the team to take. If they think a few major moves can get this team over the top... such as a number 1 d-man and a top line sniper, then I think they trust Homer to be able to make the best moves out there. If ownership wants to completely gut the team to rebuild, then I think Homer moves on.

Same as the NHL. 3 on the roster, 2 dress. Stolarz was one of the 3 invited to camp.

That Canadian team was so mismanaged from Day 1, and they didn't deserve to medal. Whether they can or can't talk about dominance, they will. Heck, Don Cherry still said they were better since most of the USA boys were Canadian-trained. It's impossible to knock the smug out of Canadians when it comes to hockey.

That's ok. We own smug in just about everything else.

Well, we do have the best women's gymnastics team. And male figure skating.

If only it were Halloween coming up instead of Christmas. But that's really how it feels, can't wait to sit comfortably again. I'm just happy to be sleeping in a bed again, instead of on my parents' couch. Worst two weeks of sleep I've ever gotten.

At least I've started PT. One step closer to getting back on the ice.

It is quite obvious what this team needs. The problem is that it is also quite obvious to every other team, and they wont be had easily.

Homer has two choices, try to keep drafting well and build from within, or bend over and take it when he has to meet the asking price.

I don't think the team needs to be gutted, but the defense core pretty much has to be built from the ground up. Holmgren hasn't gotten the job done in that aspect.
Pronger going down made the task a difficult one, but the defense has been poorly constructed. He's made a ton of questionable moves with regard to the blueline in the last 2+ years.

He's made some decent moves, made some questionable moves and had some bad luck. I would give him a C for defensive moves.

I dont think the team has to be gutted either. But regarding the defense core, the only thing I can fault Homer with is getting caught with his pants down in the Suter situation while Carle walked. He tried to get the best available, without having to overspend. Suter and Weber.

And they are currently rebuilding the defense core. They have Morin, Hagg, and Gostisbere.. all I think will be top 4 defenseman. Alt, Konan, and Laurdsen might be able to fill in a 4-6 spot. IMO all Homer would need to do is get a defenseman that can carry the load until the gap is bridged and Morin and them are ready. That is why I think Buff and Campbell would be good choices. Perfect contract length on those guys.

He got screwed putting all his eggs in the Weber/Suter basket. Given the chance again, I'd still urge him to go for Weber. I liked the trades for Coburn and Grossmann. I didn't like bidding against themselves for Streit. Never liked the JvR for Schenn deal. Timonen had to be done. Meszaros is Meszaros.

So basically, if they can go into next season with a Schenn/Coburn/Streit/Grossmann group and supplement some puck movers from within or outside, I'd be okay with it. If they move Grossmann, I'd give Lauridsen every chance to take his spot.

Third choice would be to trade for a guy that needs a change of scenery. Like Mason did. Maybe a Cam Fowler.

A C might be generous. For each of these moves, give me the good one to counter.

Trading draft picks for a washed up Pavel Kubina
Signing a well past his prime Timonen to a 6 million dollar deal
Trading JVR for Luke Schenn
Signing Streit at 35 to a 4 year deal

Acquiring Timonen (and Hartnell) for a first rounder you had just acquired as part of a good package.
Acquiring Coburn for Zhitnik
Acquiring Grossmann for a 2nd (and a 3rd?) (debatable)
Signing Gustafsson.
Acquiring Malk Alt + Boucher for Luke Pither.
Sam Morin punches people's faces.

Yes he did with Suter. Needed to get Carle locked up first. Weber was fine with me. Every other decent player was already signed, so going after Weber didn't cost anything. But you could argue he should have pulled the trigger on a trade to get him.

I'm pretty sure Homer knows what the issues are on the team. And I think he is being patient. He isn't going to give up too much, he has shown too much restraint in the past for that.

I think the asking price in the trade was fair, but high. Some rumors suggest it was B. Schenn/Couturier/Voracek/Meszaros/2 1sts. If that's the case, you're losing (at the time) your future 2nd/3rd line centers, (at the time) your future 1st/2nd line winger, (at the time) a top-4 defenseman, and 2 1sts. Hard to say yes, even for my favorite NHL player. But for the NHL's top defenseman, it's fair.

objectively speaking, i would say that is a fair trade value wise if you remove one of the forwards. them taking mez would be a favor in that deal. so 2 young guys with a lot of promise and 2 firsts for the games best defender. value wise it is pretty good to me, but i can see being leery over making that commitment both asset wise and contract wise

Now that the US is Canada biggest rival internationally, some of the smug is replaced by humble pie. I would say it goes back as far as 1996 when the US beat Canada in World Cup. Add these few games I can think of: Carlson WJC goal, Fleury's WJC puck clearing gaffe, the Toews shoot out scare, and 2010 Olympics OT; the US has proven they are not to be taken lightly. And, we wish we had the goaltending list to take to the Olympics that the US does.

Suter was a pipe dream. No one thought Suter would come to Philly. Weber is a different story. I don't mind the aggressiveness, but there has to be some kind of contingency plan put in place in case Nashville matched. Can't just lose the big fish, and then throw your hands in the air and say we tried.

i agree completely. either course, although polar opposites, is very rational. either just let what you have gel and develop, or if you think you can swing that homerun uppercut, then go all in and do it. overpaying for marginal, if any, improvements will only foster mediocrity and ultimately do nothing for you.

He's made some astute moves, my point was since Pronger went down he's done a poor job with the blueline. Not sure how that can be debated.
