If the GM were doing a sell job on him, that sell would include telling him that he can play with one of the best players in the world for next several years, and that the Islanders have several pieces that will allow them to be a contender in the long term.
I realize it's hard looking at the Islanders objectively as a fan of the team right now, but at the same time, they have some really good pieces in that organization. With JT, Strome, Reinhart, Pulock, et. in the system, and if you are luck enough to draft somebody like Ekblad this year, it really doesn't seem like a hard sell to make that the team could be real good.
To be honest, a team with the guys above would scare the beejesus out of me once they begin to develop. - Pete V
I hope your right and I'm wrong. I like Vanek and would love him to sign long term. Problem is, I just can't see him getting over the inept ownership and acceptance of losing that the Isles have embraced. Vanek is going to have a lot of suitors come July and I just can't see him looking at the isles total picture and saying "yeah, I'll pass on free agency for this". |

Wang "See Garff it says to be a Champ we need a Chimp, make this happen!!"
Snow "Charles thats just a movie, and even if the league were to let us play a bunch of chimps.. the NHLPA would never let them in the union."
Wang "But i want to be a CHAMP!!!"
Cappy "hey can I make some popcorn?"

Maybe they are going to re-sign DiPietro as a defenseman? Wang probably thinks having a defenseman with a goalie mindset might improve the defense! And hey, as a defenseman no one will care if he leaves the crease!

I would do Grabner or Bailey/Vanek and a prospect for Gardiner and Reimer. The problem is I believe Buffalo asked TO about Vanek and they weren't interested. Maybe now with some injuries they will be. Thoughts? |

Eh...I don't totally disagree with you though if I know about the players in this system and Barclay's around the corner, I'd give it consideration. I think ultimately Wang is willing to pony-up for Vanek which means he can bring in a damn fine contract. He can play with one of the top 5 players in the league as well as kids like Strome, Reinhart, Pulock Okposo etc. I think he'd likely choose Minnesota but that's provided Minnesota even wants to pay him that type of cash when they're already paying Parise and Suter huge money.
I figure that Snow should gauge what Vanek plans to do asap, tell him the overall plan...ask him to stop laughing, then trade him. - keaner17
Problem is, JT is only signed for four more years after this, right? If this circus keeps up, do you think JT re-signs? Tough to promise Vanek he'll play with JT for more than four years.
I know the prospect pool is deep, but it was supposedly deep starting after the 08 draft. Five years later, the team is still bottom five. I hope and pray that these kids develop into what they're projected to be, get this franchise out of the sewer. But it's not a given.
The isles have done very little right over the course of Wang's ownership. Just as they turned it around in 01-02, they blew it up a year later and fired a real good coach, only to see the team slide back to mediocrity. The committee fiasco. It all adds up to a circus-like aptmosphere that I can't see a player of Vanek's ability With the likely suitors he'll have opting to sign with the Isles. Again, I hope I'm wrong. |

If you look at it that way yes, but I think you have to cut bait now or wait til the deadline and if we fall completely out trade him for a draft pick, hopefully a first. |

I honestly don't think this will keep up. Too many positive factors coming down the pipeline. Reinhart and the gang will be a couple of years into their first contracts with us, Barclays will be a reality...etc. I do consider this year to be a major step backward but I also think it's an easy fix. As fans we hang on the here and now so right now we've hit our lowest low in a long while. That said, if we turn the clock back to the beginning of the season and get a mulligan on that offseason, I think this team could have taken a big step forward. Subtract the injury to Vis and Strait, add a top pairing dman and decent goalie..then eliminate Cappy and I think this team is not only fine but capable of major damage.
It's easy to take a doomsday approach to this team, but we've got TONS of talent in this system, something we didn't have the last time things got blown up. |

open letter to Snow and Wang
I live in Canada I'm 41 years old and been "DIE HARD" Islander fan since the first time Mike Bossy put the Islander Jersey on. . I drive about 3 times a year 4-6 hours to watch them in paly Toronto and Buffalo. $700 to $1000 dollars a trip. I breath orange and blue. It's been very difficult in the last 25 years to be an Islander however. I've been loyal and passionate throughout the years as I was during cup years. We got a little taste of success last year......wow did that feel good. I was proud once again be an Islander fan. Now here we are 2013-2014. Today I canceled my NHL package that was paying 30 dollars a month...I can't continue to watch this team. The fact that you haven't made changes to address the situation is beyond my belief. I respect the fact that the organization is loyal to its employees however; you have to draw the line. It's business just like it was trading Moulson away. I'm sure Capuano is a good person maybe even a good coach but, the metldowns this team is having is unacceptable. Winning 2 out 18-19 games is mindboggling. If I came to work and performed 2 out 19 days let me tell you something there would be changes. The players are not responding to the coaching staff. You have done well in the drafting area however, that doesn't mean anything if these wonderful prospects are not developing well. To me that's the coaching responsibility...which he has failed. We need something from the organization to let us know that you care about the fans because it doesn't appear you do. I hope somehow you read this post so you understand the fans are gradually becoming more and more angry, frustrated and are giving up on this team....if they haven't already. I just watched the John Spanno documentary...I'm thinking to myself nothing has really changed in the organization. At least Spanno gave us a little hope eventhough he was fraud. |
