Suter is a fabulous defenseman, but still overpayed.

Parise, is definately overpaid.

Both terms for those contracts is plain and simple stupid hockey management.

- faceto27

Exactly - you're missing my point. They're overpaid but worth it. Because they are playing well. UFAs will always be overpaid but that doesn't mean they can't play well.

trade the best d-man on the team with no viable replacements and find a new coach mid-season.

It's not a recipe for success, unless the top pick in the draft is your idea of success.

It's definitely not.

I think you should forecheck a little more aggressively and be tougher on the puck...and for the love of Bozak, try some stops and starts - it wouldn't kill you would it?

Yup. But you also need to get a big splash if you want to take your team to the next level.

It's rare that a team can get all the pieces it needs through draft and trade. Eventually, you gotta bite the bullet and overpay a player in UFA that you feel is important.

Leafs did that with Clarkson, and it hasn't panned out yet... but the whole roster has been changing on a game-by-game basis with injuries, suspensions, demotions, signings trades, and callups.

They need to settle things down and try to find some consistency.

I don't really see the Kings, or the Hawk, or the Bruins doing that.......

10 years in hockey is a very very long time

The Leafs were legitimate cup contenders 10 years ago

- faceto27

It is a very long time I agree, that's why it's hard to guess how things will turn out.

But at least with Suter and Parise, the Wild know that they'll have VERY good players for years to come who will probably slow down over time if they don't get injured.

I have less problems with these deals than overpaying a third liner as a first liner.

Signing Marian Hossa for 5.25 mil per year is a lot different than signing Clarkson for the same.

I agree. But it puts into context the comments of those who want Carlyle fired.

A lot of teams stayed out of the Clarkson bidding.

But, I think he is better than he has offered so far. But, may never live up to the Wendell Clarke expectations.

so everything is A ok to you?

if you cant see the problem then you arent watching.

the leafs did well at the top of the season when the majority of teams they played werent even playoff bound teams. Even then they were only winning due to inhuman goaltending. the shot totals against have been absurd all year.

once the competition ramped up and their goaltending came down to earth low and behold the leafs began losing.... frequently

and i think criticism of the coach is more than justified.. two games ago he had a line that combined for `11 points, within two games they arent playing together?

carlyle is over coaching.. phaneuf is under leading. both need to go.

Sorry I took so long to answer had to do some actual work haha.

Emotional response. So they're gone tomorrow who's here?

Iginla. Soderburg.
Kings did unite the Philadelphia Flyers brats, signed Scudari and picked up Williams at some point.
Hawks signed Hossa forever.

Who is comparing the two? Talking about those three teams and making a big name UFA splash. I'd take Hossa over Clarkson any day, as would everyone else I would imagine.

Reading it over again. Too many convos are going so hard to figure out what is answering what, etc...

Is your point that you don't see the Hawks, Kings or Bruins doing that Clarkson deal? Or doing a big UFA deal in general?

1. Iginla/Soderburg are completely different than Clarkson, apples and oranges.

2. Carter and Richards were both signed. I wouldn't call Scuderi or Williams big free agent splash's either.

3. Again, Hossa for 5.25 vs Clarkson is a joke.

OP said every team has to eventually overpay and make big free agent splashes at some point to which I disagreed. None of your examples makes me think any different.
