He was like that the first year of his contract with the Leafs, then was terrible after he resigned.

He was replaced by the 1mil, one year deal with Raymond that did not include a NMC.

- LeafMan

U mean the Leafs waited for a camp try out to replace Mac...Sorry it was Clarkson..Raymond was pure luck..

It was Clarkson over Mac...I like how everyone wants to believe it was Raymond over Mac...
- Fruitcakenipple

Put it this way, would Mac have signed a one year deal for 1 to 2 mil with the Leafs or not take 2 years at 3.25 and a NMC?

Name me the decent UFA's that were worth overpaying for in the past 5 years??

Go

- faceto27

Suter and Parise. It usually happens that UFAs don't earn their contracts, but that doesn't mean they can't play well. Clarkson not only hasn't earned his contract, he has been less than invisible. He has only been a detriment to this team so far.

You might be right at the onset. But then we signed Raymond for 1 mill. That made up for it in a big way.

So in the past 5 years, there has been only one player that was worth overpaying for?

If that is the case, then the most prudent thing to do, is to not sign any UFA's at all.

How? They weren't traded for each other. Completely separate pieces. Those two players should not be mentioned in the same sentence. Not that I think that Clarkson is better for the team, but I also doubt that keeping MacArthur would have made much of a difference.

They don't actually believe, it's that Raymond compares favourably with Macarthur in terms of $ and production, unlike Clarkson.

Suter is a fabulous defenseman, but still overpayed.

Parise, is definately overpaid.

Both terms for those contracts is plain and simple stupid hockey management.

An empty roster spot is a good replacement for Mac.

Big upgrade, actually.

I think you can slice it a bunch of different ways. But, essentially Grobovski and MacArthur are gone and Clarkson and Mason Are now here. I do not think it is an improvement!

Mac's @ 2-3 yrs is a whole lot better than that retirement contract Clarkson got..

And the Leafs could still have added Raymond...

It wasn't Raymond or Mac it was Mac or Clarkson..

Is it fair to say, that at least 75% of the "name players" are overpaid at UFA time??

Which makes it not worth it to sign them. Since they will almost certainly not achieve the production for what they are signed for.

Yeah Like Briere

I dont know ask the GMs..its not like the leafs are the only ones.. Weiss, Briere the list is long just from this summer

Grabo was a good signing oh and Macarthur

- senstroll

He (frank)ing sucks.

The only good thing about his contract is the fact it's only for two years.

It's not the same kind of commitment.

It depends. If you don't have any star players to spend your money on, why not take a change at signing UFAs?

I mean, it's not like it (frank)s up your cap situation if you don't have anyone to spend the money on and your team is allowed to spend to the cap limit.
