Simmonds skating around Carlson was awesome last night.
- Marc D

Simmonds skating Through Carlson would have been better, and what I expect from a power-forward.

Brayden Schenn says he does not have a concussion. Got a text from Wilson this morning.

I guess I have a different idea of what a concussion is then.
He was initially limp and briefly seemed unresponsive then buckled several times trying to skate off the ice.

Head shot + unresponsive = concussion.
I'm glad he's feeling ok though.

You are being pretty tough here, he scored a goal after using his speed to go right around the D.

I mean come on, really?

Isn't a concussion a bruise on the brain from contact with the skull?

Somebody getting smashed in the nose is going to be dazed, likely staggering/falling and perhaps unresponsive for a few seconds, but they probably won't have a concussion.

Doesn't matter if a guy gets hit in the nose, jaw, or head. Any of those can cause the brain to be jarred.

If a guy is unresponsive it's from the brain impact.

Schenn was concussed last night.
Maybe he doesn't have post concussion symptoms which is great.
But that doesn't mean he wasn't concussed.

Yea, that is not a concussion. You can get knocked loopie aka be knocked out, without getting a concussion. A concussion is a brain injury that will be accompanied by nausia, headaches, dizziness, fatigue, and reduced mental capacities.

either way, it definitely looked pretty bad. if he can't go against the Blue Jackets, does Read come up a line and center Hartnell and Simmonds...bringing up someone to play w/ Couts and Downie?

I being tough because its true. He tries to be a finesse player way to much. He needs to stand in front of the net. Bang bodies. Use his body to shield the puck and be effective against the boards. The fact he got a goal last night using skating will me he will keep trying to be a finese player and continue to piss me off more.

Lol... All this talk about Gardiner. So we get Luke, then Gardiner, then Phaneuf in FA.... Can someone remind me how good toronto's defense has been with these guys?

I'm all for trading away each and every dman we have (except streit - I think we are stuck with him which might be a good thing in the end) but I don't want the entire Toronto d in return. Leave Gardiner for someone else - get phaneuf if possible (at least he's a proven that top pairing guy). Jmo.

Agreed. And I doubt he'll be in the lineup next game. I wouldn't mess with the Couts line, so I think Rosehill will be back and VDV and Hall will rotate between the 2nd and 4th lines, and Berube will almost certainly double shift Couts until he's playing 30+ minutes per game.

i'm certainly not sold on Vande Veld as anything but an ice filler on that 4th line...you think maybe someone from Phantoms gets a shot? McGinn's gotten his looks...maybe Straka?

Has Gardiner even cracked the line up this season? I'm not giving up a roster player for an ahl level puck moving dman. We've already got streit. Although he has played better of late.

Edit Gardiner has 35 games this season under his belt.

Basically, yes. But you can get one without having an impact to the head. Any jolt to the body sufficient to jostle the brain inside the skull can result in a concussion.

you're the first person I've seen complain that Simmonds tries to be a finesse player too often. He's been one of the more consistently gritty forwards on the team since he got here.

if you want to be pissed off at one of the power forwards for not using his body enough look no further than Hartnell.

I agree, except Schenn-Hartnell-Simmonds is clearly the 3rd line. Just look at the ice time. They may well just stick VdV in if BSchenn will only be out a game or two. He's a natural center and the highest goal scorer on the Phantoms this year. They don't really have a better option if BSChenn and Lecavalier are both out injured.

yeah, he's gotten a bit better in recent games ... but still seems to cause a lot less havoc than in years past.

Does phone hearing mean an automatic suspension?
If he was just being fined would they have a phone hearing?

In person hearing means a long suspension.

I'm less concerned with havoc than his contributing offensively. Most of the year he's just been a non-factor all around.

Aside from Grossman going after Wilson...is anyone else concerned with the lack of "stick up for your guys" from this team?

Giroux got hit way late by Fehr and then also got hit up high down below their net on a play and of course Schenn got leveled. I didn't really see anyone taking it physically to the Caps and I was a little surprised by it.

Obviously I'm nitpicking because the effort last night was great, but I feel like I've seen this before from this team. And of course, I"m not arguing for taking stupid penalties, making them pay on the scoreboard is the ultimate revenge, it just didn't feel right last night.

On the flipside, how great is Couterier going to be? I think the biggest thing he's doing for us right now is taking pressure off of Giroux who disappoints me as a captain with his lackadaisical defensive coverage (see Washington's second goal). Courterier stepping up make G not have to be THE MAN on every single shift, like it appeared he had to be during the first 8 games while this team sat back waiting for someone to be that guy.

- shekkie

I was shocked when the guys didn't respond at all to the late hit on G. I think a few may have not seen it at first but Kimmo watched it and just looked around like "do I really have to deal with this?"
