debateable for sure.

contract doesn't have anything to do with trade value either?

Yeah, but I wasn't really addressing anything do with cap issues. My comment was in response to the poster that implied that some how the Jets are at a disadvantage if Kane truly did want out of Winnipeg. Makes no difference whether he's happy there or not as far as what they'll ask for or get if they were to venture trading him.

More importantly, why sign a guy to a 6 year deal and then turn around and trade him? Kane is the guy you build a team around, not sign him to a big deal and move. Makes no sense to begin with, unless of course Garth Snow somehow has a say in it....

I would have to disagree, I thought this was a horible trade the moment it happened for a number of reasons, their stats were about the same when the trade happened, moulson and tavares played very well together not to mention they are best friends and roomates, vanek is not going to sign there it was rumored for quite a while before the trade that he wanted to try to sign with the wild this summer.
I thought at the time and still do that this would be the worst trade of the season

Agreed. At least from the Isles perspective. I made this same point to an Isles fan and his response was that if Vanek doesn't want to re-sign that they can move him at the trade deadline for player(s) and pick(s). But as I pointed out to him, they could have done that with Moulson and saved their own first and second round picks in the process... NOTHING about that trade made much sense from the side of NY. Buffalo of course got a pretty nice deal, kind of an extra bonus, because now they can try to re-sign Moulson or trade him and get even more in return for moving Vanek... Not saying Moulson will garner as much as Vanek would have, but it's virtually like NY in essence just gave Buffalo a first and a second rounder. Vanek and Moulson are the same player for all intents and purposes this season...

vanek has proven much more over a longer period though. in 7 years he's scored over 40 twice, over 30 four times, and over 25 all seven. (was on pace for over 40 last year too).

that's a very top echelon goal scorer.

I think they looked at is a complimentary scorer and a first for an all star.

not to mention at the time of the trade they were playing pretty well and were really looking to take that next step. in a place like long island, I think playoffs and winning a round or two is massive to any revenue stream.

u might be right though, especially considering the chance of him not resigning. tough to say. I suppose I see it a little different. but I think they felt the pick would be a lower first and moulson. and not too worried about the second.
