I would have to disagree, I thought this was a horible trade the moment it happened for a number of reasons, their stats were about the same when the trade happened, moulson and tavares played very well together not to mention they are best friends and roomates, vanek is not going to sign there it was rumored for quite a while before the trade that he wanted to try to sign with the wild this summer.
I thought at the time and still do that this would be the worst trade of the season

vanek has proven much more over a longer period though. in 7 years he's scored over 40 twice, over 30 four times, and over 25 all seven. (was on pace for over 40 last year too).
that's a very top echelon goal scorer.
I think they looked at is a complimentary scorer and a first for an all star.
not to mention at the time of the trade they were playing pretty well and were really looking to take that next step. in a place like long island, I think playoffs and winning a round or two is massive to any revenue stream.
u might be right though, especially considering the chance of him not resigning. tough to say. I suppose I see it a little different. but I think they felt the pick would be a lower first and moulson. and not too worried about the second.
