In fact, on HNIC one of the panel (forget who---Weekes maybe) who thought the Oil should go out and make a deal with Ottawa to get Bishop or Lehner, though it was thought that Lehner would be retained. The Oilers were 21st and Dubnyk had a 10-10-6 2.58 920.

Tampa Bay was 2 points behind Edmonton.

Bishop got traded to the Lightning and finished the season 11-9-3 2.66 and a .920 sv% overall.

At the time, did Dubnyk not look to have "starter potential"? In my eyes, he totally did. He was rocking a .920+ Sv% around that time on a less than average team. Anyone who suggests they knew, beyond a doubt that Dubnyk couldn't be a starter at last season's trade deadline is fooling no one but themselves. No one could have foretold Dubnyk's epic collapse.

Sure it was a move that made a deal of sense, but it wasn't an absolute necessity like it is now. As the cliche goes: "Hindsight is 20-20".
