I can imagine the call from JJ…

"2 on 1 the other way with Pronger's stick as the lone defenseman. The pass across…broken up by Pronger's stick! Boy, they positioned that thing perfectly!"

- PhillySportsGuy

The sad thing is that Prongers stick is better defensively than either Streit or Mez

Wow, seriously?
Cool!

It's great that Berube has that kind of confidence, but 26 mins is ridiculous. I have to wonder how much energy Coots had left during the latter part of the 3rd.

They're lulling the league into a false sense of security. They're gonna put the pedal to the metal in the second half, and Lauridsen will average about 37 points per game, a distant 3rd behind Akeson's 583 goals/1893 assists and McGinn's 495 goals/1764 assists.
- jmatchett383

I was going over the roster to find someone to make fun of, and I noticed that Lauridsen actually leads the Phantoms in plus/minus with a +10.

I know plus/minus is a flawed stat, but I was kind of impressed. I don't know if this is an indication of how bad the Phantoms are or if Lauridsen is not half bad.

That's a good point. Read was also up to almost 25 minutes. Those are heavy minutes especially on the road against tough opponents. Giroux and Voracek were both at 19-20 minutes. Other forwards need to step up and start playing better two way hockey.

It pretty much tells you who Berube thinks is the best player on the team right now.

All reports are that he's played very well, kudos to Terry Murray!
If they are expecting the big guy and Alt to make the big club next year, I would love to see Murray as an assistant coach. I'd have to think he could help Gus and Schenn as well.

Wouldn't mind see him as a late call up again this year. If he can assume Grossman's role, that would save the team money and give them an asset to trade.

you mean when they should have taken a timeout after that icing before the tying goal? or was it the third goal... sigh.

Exactly, outside of Coots, Read and maybe Raffl who else can they really have confidence in to protect a lead late in games? As team captain and their best player, Giroux needs to work harder and be more consistent in these situations.

I would like the Flyers to play Gus the whole season. He is the only mobile defenseman they have. I know he makes some mistakes, but his skating and skill are sorely needed. I remember one sequence where his skating got the Flyers a 2 on 1. He missed the net with his shot, but there is no other defenseman on the team that would have created that opportunity.

The Schenn line is the real killer because they are strictly one way hockey players right now. It's difficult to put them on the ice late in games when ahead. I understand Berube's concern, but sometimes you just need to throw caution to the wind in order to save your best players some minutes.

Sounds good to me!
I think they need Gus and Lauridsen (who actually skates pretty well) to be regulars by next season if they are going to improve. Along with Coburn, and hopefully one new acquisition, this would give them 4 dmen who skate well.

I also have little confidence in a 4th line with Rinaldo on one wing and either VDV or Rosehill on the other. Would it really be that hard to make a small deal to acquire a solid, defensively responsible checking forward to replace VDV/Rosehill on that line?
You can usually pick up a guy like that for a 4th rounder or less.

Thats what the league is now. You need guys who can skate. This team is lacking that aspect all over the lineup.

I don't think the 4th line is that far away. I think they need a good defensive player with speed. A healthy Wellwood would be the perfect fit. Hall is defensively responsible, Rinaldo skates well and provides energy and Wellwood skates very well and is defensively responsible.

Have to wonder if Wellwood will still have that kind of speed after the injury he suffered

Lucic seemed "confused", maybe he is confusing bar oatron with Luke Gadzic from the Oilers.

I wonder if that guy was just a dude who wanted to take a shot an athlete or if there was something more to it.
