The only way I see Toronto going after him is if they allow Franson to walk and Girardi takes a home town discount.

Van isn't a good fit for Girardi. They need forward depth right now, not more defensemen. They already have a poor man's Girardi in Bieksa (say what you will, but he's had a great year so far). I'm not saying they couldn't use Girardi at all, but in the salary cap era, the money is much better spent up front.

I think they will have to be create in trades and diamond in the rough signings. I dont think they ever will be spend to the max team ever again, depending on the internal budget they might just add a few extra mill here and there to get slightly over the floor
