Stefan Matteau
1994-02-23
Position: C
Drafted: 1st round (29th overall) 2012
Height: 6-1
Weight: 209 lbs
Matteau plays the game with a lot of energy, passion, and intensity. He uses his big, strong frame to play an in-your-face physical style along the boards and the corners. While not blessed with elite level skill, he has decent hands, a heavy shot and knows how to create space for himself by protecting the puck in the offensive zone. Matteau is well schooled defensively and should become a good penalty killer with his good speed and aggressive nature. However, his borderline style has gotten him into penalty trouble.
Despite his young age, Matteau played a safe, competitive game during his first year with the Devils. As long as he learns to control his aggressive style, he could end up as a complementary second line player. Otherwise, a safe projection sees him developing into a mean, physical, two-way forward.

From Hockey Central @ Noon with Brian Burke: http://www.sportsnet.ca/5...0/hockey-central-at-noon/
at 24:02 Burke says "Jay spoke to Hockey Canada"..... ...then Burke goes on to say: "I had ALREADY spoken to Hockey Canada....."
a small sign that he had already started driving the bus before his so-called "analysis" was complete..... |

Have to say that game was one of the more enjoyable games to watch! What the Flames lack in elite skill they make up for with a blue collar work ethic. The Flames play the right way and are a fun team to watch.
At times last night the Flames just ground away in the Canes zone.. mostly in the 2nd. Nothing flashy but a puck support and cycle deep in the corners. They played with a physical edge and finished all their checks.
I personally though the Canes deserved a better fate and created some of the better scoring chances but Ramo made some nice saves. A few posts and a couple missed nets were the difference. Who can argue with a point on the road though.
Congrats Flames fans that was a treat to watch! - SouthSide

...what was said, is just common sense my friend. If you have (ever) heard Burke speak, you know he wants his guys to be physical, to an extent, even his "skilled" players.
While Gaudreau is small, hes not going to use that as an excuse for him to not play their style of the game, and that doesnt mean that Gaudreau will be expected to lay guys out, but he wont be impressed if he is unable to keep up to the physical side of things. His intention with that comment was nothing more than to say to Johnny, please dont leave us high and dry...we will make it work.
All things considered, we all know that how much he plays over the course of the next year or so will depend on his ability to play with the big boys, he would likely be playing already if it werent for his lack of size, he has the skill. |

We still need elite players & just because Sven isn't playing like one now, he does have the skills, where I think Matteau could be more of a 3rd line centre. We have lots of those in Backlund, Knight, Reinhart, possibly Colborne. Sven straight up is not a good deal. |

That game was boring as hell. We had the box last night and ended up spending more time watching the football game and getting poop faced.
Terrible hockey. |

Just bugging you. Just sounded like my wife who would make up twists in a story to get the kids to do what she wants when they were small.
Kadri isn't a large player but Burke drafted him & didn't trade him. Some teams just make young players over learn & ripen in the AHL, Detroit is notorious for that. Doesn't mean Sven is getting traded. Thing is, Burke is a smart hombre, a trade would have to be pretty sweet for him to give up on any kid. I didn't have that confidence with Feasty. |

Nah. Not interested. We don't need another bottom 6 guy that will be a good pk'r. Especially another that is a left shot. |

Not how I saw it... apparently you dont like that style of hockey.. or you were to busy getting "poop faced" and watching football to notice a good game.... or just being an Oilers fan completely tarnished your opinion on what good hockey should be ;p
It was crisp all around.. some nice saves.. some nice hits.. good puck support... good paced with some creativity mixed in.

"Edmonton starter Devan Dubnyk whiffed on a long hopeful shot from the blue-line by Seidenberg, who was sending the puck in while his team made a line change just past the mid-mark of the first period."
This quote from the good people of Sportsnet.com
At least the Flames have a couple guys that can stop pucks

On another note I'm so glad Calgary took Poirier over Shinkaruk. Poirier is exactly a Burke type player. |

I'm not personally high on him either but there are many who like him a lot more then I do. A lot of that has to do with him being selected with the pick we should of gave up and chose not to but whatever |

You think Ramo will get the next start? When that tying goal went in I thought oh crap, that will be 3 straight starts for Berra & then he stopped Skinner. I gotta agree with our Oiler buddy, the 1st two periods were like watching paint dry. The 3rd did get a little better, the overtime was pretty good. Some teams should just play 4 on 4 for the sake of the fans. |

Didn't like Ramo. I could see why he is not getting the bulk of the time. He moves too much and ends up out of position. Which is why he gets lit up by fast puck moving teams. Hate to admit it but I've liked what I've seen of Berra live. |
