Right after he said" we are too small, and we play too soft. I like truculence, there I said it. You guys have been waiting for me to say it."

No thanks, I can't stand to watch the lackadaisical play for another 5 plus years. Gives up too much on plays, that is not a 7 plus mil player.
- LeafMan

Aside from your misjudgment of Phaneuf, the main problem with what you guys are saying is that you're assuming you can just get other guys. That they'll just sign with the Leafs, at a decent price.

WHEN DOES THAT EVER HAPPEN?

Last time we signed two reliable big-name defensemen in UFA we wound up with Beauchemin and Komisarek.

Anyone remember how that worked out for us?

And... If by some miracle they find a Dman better than Phaneuf, they'd be far better off pairing him with Dion than replacing him.

- Big_Lightnin

But how do you pay both of them. That would be a 14 milly d pairing.

They better be able to play 35 min per and score every night.

Some things are better left a distant memory... this is one of those cases... bringing that up just makes you some kind of sadist...

How is it working with Phaneuf? You want see him standing around like in game 7 against Boston picking his ass? No Thanks, he is not worth it.

You pay them with money. Just like anyone else.

Leafs have cap space.
Lots of cap space.

Neither are top level prospects. They're good. Not great.

Not that I think its a great reference, but neither ranked in the top 50 in HF.

btw.. who is the leafs top prospect? no NHL experience.

It's working out fantastically. He's one of the best d-men in the league and works his ass off every night.

I guess the game 7 collapse is all his fault though.

Giving Dion $7 million is only a $500k raise over his cap hit now... Tucker and some other crap coming off the cap too... cap going up... get rid of some dead wood (ie Ranger) and it's entirely possible... just not likely... as #1 dman are pretty much NEVER available... Orpik hitting the open market? HA!

last time we signed d-men to inflated deals just because they happened to be "the best on the leafs" was mccabe and kaberle.

that is also something that worked out awesome.

A WHOLE HISTORY OF AWESOME

Morgan Rielly - playing
Frederik Gauthier
Josh Leivo
Matt Finn
Stuart Percy

Although I think Carter Verhaeghe and Connor Brown should be 2 and 3.

like, not even a couple of games(Leivo)?

It'd have to be someone like Percy, Finn, Verhaeghe or that dude in sweden.

With ant other dman you could get in free agency they probably don't make the playoffs though. Forget game 7 altogether.

There was no cap then, and Kabyles deal was a steal. Maccabees was fine too, but people have no perspective.

I would gladly take two good d-men for example Orpik and Giradi and or Matt Greene for 9 to 10 mill over one Phaneuf at 7 mil. Would not think twice about it.
- LeafMan

Exactly.
Plus he simply isn't effective playing more than 23 minutes.

Good D player...but might time to move.
Who replaces him? well that's for the Gm to figure out.
