I think most people on here watch a fair amount of hockey and use a more complex analasys to determine a players value and skill set than just the stats page of NHL.com

LOTS of folks just dont like the way he plays. Watching him for years now, I understand why thats the case.

It is what it is. The leafs are worse off without him, but they need to find him a capable partner to sort out the liability he can be if they're ever going to go anywhere.

To be putting him on a list with the leagues elite defenseman is ridiculous.

There are 180 regular defensemen in the league (210 if you want to include the guy on each team who is shuffled in and out of the press box).

What's elite? Top 10% is probably not exclusive enough. Top 5%? That's the 95th percentile and up.

Of 210, I'd say Phaneuf makes that list. As I've always maintained, he is a top 10-15 defenseman, who can make his way into the top 10 in a good year - a year like this one.
