Are we really going to judge dion based on his play with a dysfunctional flames team (look at Bouwmeester now) or a Ron Wilson team? (Francois Beauchemin says hi).

Not to forget he's been stuck with stiffs like Kostka, Holzer, Aulie and Gunnarson. I'm amazed right now he's not -10 this season with that baggage.

I'm kinda glad Dion got suspended, it will give us all a good look at what the d would be like without him against pretty good teams. It will be real interesting if they pull off a couple wins, might make people think a bit...

I'm not sure that Kostka and Aulie wouldn't be a help on the Leafs defense right now.... based on how - not just Gunnarson is playing... but when JMLiles is your best defense player for at least half a game against the Bruins... what does that tell you about the rest of the guys.

this could be a repeat of the "Sundin injured" scenarios that played themselves out so often in the late 90s and early 2000s. Sundin gets injured... and everybody decides they actually have to start playing to make up for his absence.

yup... they'll have lots of cap space... but how much of it can they actually spend?

and what will it do to the team salary structure if they bring someone in who's paid more than say Duschene going forward?

realistically, the AVs will resign Statsny.. and he's not going to take a 3M$ haircut... so Statsny at $5 or 6M, Varlamov is going to get a big raise and O'Reilly at 5M at aleast... so there's approximately 15M of your CAP spent.

The reason that there isn't much chatter about Phaneuf is that every GM in the league knows that he's overpaid at his current salary. The Leafs would be insane to give him 7+ long term. Nonis hasn't made a good move since he took over for Burke. This playoff caliber team is Burke's creation and Nonis is doing what he can to unravel it, so I wouldn't be surprised if he gives Phaneuf 8 years, 56 million.

Nonis seems to frequently take over for Burke. Nonis will work himself out of a job soon enough. hows that shadow Nonis?

Elliott is down in the AHL working on his game, Roy wanted him to rebuild himself with big minutes partnering with Blades teammate Seimens.

He has some decent numbers, (12 pts in 23gms) will be called up eventually, maybe after a few deadline moves. Holden, Guenin, and Benoit are quick cheap fixes. They wont see much more time after this season.
