Why do we need a LD in Phaneuf when we have Greene, Merrill, Gelinas, Salvador and Volchenkov. - Rseen
We don't doesn't mean he wouldn't greatly improve this team. Also if for some strange reason we where to acquire him or sign him it would give us an option of upgrading the forward position by trading a young defense man for for a decent forward instead of trying to sign a busted up expensive forward via f/a we could possibly trade for a decent one that doesn't have an injury history and is under 30. It's hard to find a decent f/a forward that doesn't fall under one if not both those things. He would also bring a physical presence as he hits like a truck something we lack since Volchenkov can't keep up to anyone to hit them anymore. |

Honestly, I think we overvalue Greene as NJ fans. Fact is there are better options. That's why he's not on team USA. He's a #1 in NJ, but that's because the Devils suck. |

I wouldn't say that. Yea he is an obvious number 1 on our relatively unknown blue line but he still does a damn good job in those number 1 minutes does he not ? He still has to play every other team in the leagues best players for 23-27 minutes a night. He has a great contract can handle large minutes and defensive responsibility plus chip in 30 pts I don't see how he wouldn't have great value with just about every team in the league screaming for help on the blue line. |

Haven't been paying attention but from what I have heard Shattenkirk has been playing pretty well but I think he is on the second pair behind Jbo and Pietroangelo |

Oprik and Martin both suffereing injuries do help his chances though. I want him to make the team so there is legitimately one guy I like on team usa. A lot of bumholes on the team. But obiviously i have to cheer for them doesn't mean it's not tough. |

Ryan Suter-John Carlson
Ryan McDonagh-Kevin Shattenkirk
Paul Martin-Erik Johnson
Dustin Byfuglien-Jack Johnson
Justin Faulk, Cam Fowler, Seth Jones, Brooks Orpik, Keith Yandle
Bogosian, Leddy, DeKeyser.
He could be in there somewhere, but it's not surprising given some of the names. He's a good defenseman and a good one for NJ, but let's see..
Pick 6?
Suter, Martin, Byfuglien, Orpik, Yandle, McDonagh.
Given two of those are injured, I'd have thought he'd make the team to be honest. Thought the injuries paved the way for him to be on the roster.
With everyone healthy I knew he had no shot. Like I said, we as Devils fan overvalue and praise him because to NJ he's worth a lot more. But if NJ had those defensemen on the roster, I'd expect him to be a healthy scratch, trade bait, or in Albany. Just being honest about it & trying to avoid being a homer. If I wanted an overly analytical homer opinion I'd hang out on Fire & Ice. But I'm being simplistic & honest.

Orpik is going to be great the Olympics because he's slow which is perfect for an Olympic sized hockey rink. |

Honestly he has become one of my favourite Devils right now so I may be a little bit biased. But I think the guy is a legit top pairing D man. He is so solid defensively, rarely makes a mistake, is very calm and always gets the puck out of the zone and has a good outlet pass to go along with good offensive ability. I would say he is probably a #2 D man for a contender. Just because team USA left him off doesn't make him not good, they clearly haven't done a good job scouting him. They invited a lot of players that are lesser than him. |

Personally I don't want to sign him because of what his demands will be. Most likely he wants over $7 million at 7 years as a free agent. He won't be worth it, I can see him declining very quick. If we didn't have someone like Gelinas then maybe I'd be a little more okay with it, but not now. |

I think the top 5 of McDonough, Suter, Shattenkirk, Carlson and Yandle are the best defenders and then there is everyone else. If I was in charge of the roster I probably don't choose Greene, but if Jack Johnson and Erik Johnson are in the conversation Greene definitely deserves to be based on his performance this season. |

I don't mind it I don't think he has suffered a serious injury yet in his career he might be like JBO or they might start piling up fast. I don't think he is necessary and like you said he will want a truck load of money and I don't want to be tied down to someone in a contract like that when we already have Clowe and Zajac on somewhat iffy deals. I am waiting for that franchise center to come rolling through here haha that would be nice. |

These are the only two guys i question. Sure they may have more offense to there games than Greene but I tend to think he is more reliable defensively. What hurts Greene's chacnes the most is Mcd, Suter and Yandle all being lefties. Shattenkirk, Carlson, Buff, E.Johnson all get a nod before him just because they are righties. I will be a little upset if both Johnsons are on the team over Greene. Anyone else and not so much really. |

Fair enough. Like I said, everyone healthy I don't think he's worthy. With the injuries I thought he'd make the cut.
I'm not a Greene hater, he's clearly the best defender NJ has and as far as NHL-wide goes he's underrated. But I just don't see him as better than the other guys I mentioned that's all. |
