I turned off the game when it came to the shoot out. The Flyers don't win shootouts unless Vinny is in the line up.
Anyway, I can still see the Islander fans laughing at us for scooping up Streit. I would put him in the box, and bring Gus in. At least Gus can play D, is quicker, and makes better decisions (see pinch number 1, and 2 that led to goals last night).
Also, will the team start working on their passing skills. Man, they miss on their passes too much; thus their turnovers are high, and their shots on goal are low. Then, their offensive zone pressure is inconsistent. I guess all those penalties the other night scared the forwards from hitting anyone. Finally, why do players like Neil (Sens), and Wilson (Caps) get away with hitting everyone. After Neil hit Grossman numerous times last night, I thought that someone should have started going after him. WTF? In the end, I feel bad for Mason. Two bad pinches left to him being hung out to dry, and one kick in by Schenn led to three of the goals. Good luck the rest of the season with this team Mason; it's going to be a long season.

Never liked the Streit deal. I was optimistic that he might be a nice surprise and really be a solid qb for the Flyers PP. Instead he's not as smooth and confident with the puck and has a very tough time getting looks through traffic and to the net for someone making his salary. He's a lot slower than I thought as well.

They gave lecavalier too many years too.. The only deal they made in the offseason they did right was emery and if anything they prolly shoulda locked him up for a few more years.

At least they signed Rosehill to that 2-year extension last year.

I'm not worried about rosehill ... He does what he's paid to do: fight and win. Now if we wanna discuss the need for an enforcer, I couldn't care either way but Detroit seems to do fine without one. It does add an entertainment value to the team I suppose.

If the 5th year was the difference between getting Lecavalier and not getting him I'm glad they gave it to him.

Why didn't they just sign Crosby and Ovechkin instead of Streit and Vinny? Can't believe how stupid Holmgren is.

That win streak wasn't an aberration. They can play really well against certain teams and poorly against others. They're an average team that needs appropriate tinkering from their general manager. Now will that happen?

I'm aggravated by the Flyers play, delighted by the turd of a game thrown up by the Cowboys last night, and totally not looking forward to shovelling more snow.

I think it was Paul Maclean who said something along the lines of "at a certain point in the season, a team is what its record says it is". I know this core is young but I think Holmgren and gang needs to seriously look at and consider if this is a core that can win us anything, even two or three years down the road. If it were me personally I'd implode the defense and start back over with only Coburn, Grossmann and Gustafsson. I'd go after big fish like Weber and Phaneuf, and shave more cap in order to go after the winger we need in Gaborik or Vanek (hoping one or both make it to free agency). I'd make a small trade for more speed on D, by getting a guy like Diaz from Montreal. It may seem reactionary that I say this after a loss, but I am getting worried about this team's ability to consistently win games.

Its the middle of december.. or they way the Flyers have played the past couple of weeks, the muddle of december. You're right to be concerned. We're still waiting for the Flyers to pick it up and play consistently, and we may still be waiting in April. I don't think anyone knows exactly what the Flyers have in this team.

True, but we do know for sure that the defense is too slow, and that definitely needs to be addressed. The only guy they're playing at the moment with good speed is Coburn. Its fine to have a slow shutdown guy like Grossmann in the lineup, but he should be your exception, not your rule.

The team defense seems to be breaking down the last few games.
Neutral zone again looks like a racetrack for opponents.
More odd man rushes against.
D starting to pinch and get burned.
With 32 and 8 as a pair, I'm not comfortable with either of those guys pinching.
Forwards looked completely out of gas by the third.
Dallas and Ottawa skated circles around these guys.
Chicago and. Montreal could be very ugly.
Sorry, just can't muster much to be optimistic about right now.
I guess Jake looked a lot better, wish him or G converted some of those fine chances they created.

They did the most important thing they could do to improve in shootouts - they got a goalie who is pretty good at them (and more importantly is a very good goaltender in general.) Mason has a career shootout SV% of .658. The Flyers all time SV% in shootouts is only .575 - 31st in a league with 30 teams.

I would love it if we had one of those weird 4th line guys who was a shootout master, but stopping the other team is more important. Read and Giroux both have great career shootout records, they just didn't get it done last night. And Couturier was very unlucky.

- Feanor

Mason hasn't been the issue with shootouts at all. For a team with a bunch of skilled players they are completely inept at scoring in the shootout.

Yeah, after watching Bryz and Briere get bought out, Streit show up like Andy Delmore, Pronger out of the game entirely, Vinny injured for the 3rd-time in 30-games, the solution is still throw more star players at the problem?

I think we know exactly what they are: an average NHL team.
They will look good against weak clubs and bad against good clubs on most nights. Barring a rash of major injuries, they will finish with 82-88 points and anywhere from 3rd to 7th in the division. They will most likely miss the playoffs but be close enough to not be true sellers at the deadline and they will most likely pick somewhere between 6th and 14th in the 1st round of the draft.

15.23 W Flyers 13
11.53 L Flyers 14
3.7 OL Flyers 3
82.73 Goals For Flyers 68
