Phaneuf's gotten better every season as a Leaf. Last 3(including this one) he's been a bonafide #1 guy. It's not that he's playing better for a contract. He's just been playing better and better every year. The guy's maturing into his role... not making dumb pinches, playing great defensive hockey, and putting up points, against the toughest competition any d-man in the league has had to face.

That's the kind of guy you keep, and build around.

He's actually reading that backwards. Phaneuf has been on the ice for 41 of the 86 goals the Leafs have scored, not had scored against. He's been on the ice for only 32 that they've had scored against, and more than half, 18, have been PK. For the amount of ice he gets, just 14 goals against is excellent.
