Ek has another rumor that Edmonton is seriously interested in Couts. The deal, IMO starts at Yakupov, their 1st and best young Dman. Thoughts?
- jstross

Nah, I don't like the idea of trading one of our hardest workers for someone with work ethic conerns. If anything, I think we should trade one of our guys with work ethic concerns for a guy who'll play his heart out every shift like Simmonds, Read, and Couturier do.

I'd rather ask for somebody with less question marks than Yakupov, but it'd take a ton for me to move Couturier.

who would you consider someone with work ethic concerns? even when the level of play sucks, it really doesnt scream of just not trying.

As much as I like his skill, I'd consider Voracek that. I think there have been losses this year where we definitely showed poor effort. There have been some wins where we showed poor effort.

I think he has really good value, he's a young top line winger. I love him, but I'd like if we moved him for a harder working player.

That's why I'm so happy with Matt Read's contract.

Yeah, I guess my point was it has to be a huge overpay by Edmonton and one to Homer's liking. Any and all trades need to improve the future. No exception.

haha nah is right. i dont know who would even want that contract. like i said, i can stomach a concession of taking a few steps back. just dont hover in no man's land. you either have a team good enough to compete, or you dont. if you don't, take the steps necessary to move in that direction, even if it is a momentary step backwards. marlon byrd is not going to accomplish either.

That contract, ugh...but if they can trade his ass, I'd be cool with them even eating half of it, just to be rid of that clown

I'd probably go full on, balls to the wall, rebuild. I'd dump Howard, Utley, Papelbon for whatever I could get and really push for guys who might have a bit of value like Ruiz, Lee and Rollins to grab assets.

Then splurge with the savings and new TV deal money

as heartbreaking as it is to see a lot of guys go, i think i would do the same. howard, i honestly dont think you could give him away at his contract, let alone get any sort of assets back. Lee is a reason to watch solely by himself every fifth day, but i think i would move him too and try to get a good haul. same with utley, he would probably hurt most of all, but i would.

who keeps the cut or you as far as keeping as part of the forward solution? hamels and brown? besides that?

Hamels, Brown, Revere...some of the young pitchers, like DeFratus, Rosenberg. Problem is, I don't trust Rube to get good value for the handful of vets that might have some left.

It's just that they are counting heavily on so many pieces who are old and injury prone. It's not as if these are just old guys, there's major health concerns all over the field.

definitely. a lot has changed since 2009 and they need to realize that. i dont know what howard's deal is. hes definitely not young, but not old enough to be washed out. injuries are a big part, but mentally he seems shot. utley, bless his heart, but simply cant be viewed as a franchise carrier anymore. Lee and Hamels can still carry the front of a rotation, but beyond that? its issues galore everywhere, with no real easy fix in sight. the lineup is atrocious.

It's hard for a power hitter to come back from that kind of injury, and he was hurt again last season. His issue is injury more than age. Utley, as well, is more injury than age.

The age factor just makes it harder to come back from those injuries.
