ummm, is that you at the bottom?

- puckhead17

Your arguments are elementary.

Thornton hit a player multiple times after the play. Orpik hit some legally during play. What are you missing?

Im on the fence about the older players but to be honest I think the lawyers are using the older guys to see where it all stands legally before we get to the 90's and beyond players to actually lay down a law suit of some magnitude.

The NHL needs to act now if it wants to stay out of the courts later.

- walshy66

I just dont see how there could be much of a lawsuit since we as people still dont know enough about concussions. Not to mention lots of the players played through knowing they had these types of injuries.

What the (frank) does this have to do with Sid? James Neal doesn't need to do this gutless garbage he has been pulling the past couple seasons....he's such a talented player but is just a moron. Like wtf is the guy thinking?

For all the Flyers fans coming in here, Rinaldo was a Roussel duck away from being worse than what Thornton did tonight. Defend the guy. Its a joke. Fighting in the game needs to go. Its useless.
- Deadstar

I think most of us are still trying to figure out what set Rinaldo off like that as opposed to defending him. And he might get suspended and I don't know of anybody that would argue with that. I'm just not clear why a deliberate knee to the head is downplayed.

There is a correlation there to deterioration in post career life quality and the amount of concussions someone gets. I still think these guys are patsies for a bigger suit later on.

How you 'blame' (for want of a better term) when you go into a game that legally allows fighting, for concussions, is what I think this suit is about. Framing the next suit.

Neal deserves a suspension as well I am not arguing that. Thornton was a complete goon and deserves a very long suspension.

Very minority opinion, even Bylsma isn't downplaying it:

@MolinariPG
Bylsma: Neal "didn't really make an attempt to get out of the way" before kneeing Marchand in head.

I'm curios.... Do you get so worked up when Flyers players do some of the same garbage? The Cryers have loaded their organization up with scumbags over the years. Your team employed Chris Pronger. How man dirty hits did he deliver in his career. Darien Hatcher.....guy was probably an angel in your mind.

Didn't Fraud get suspended for a head shot? Of course he's mailing this year in so maybe you'd take anything you can get from the guy.

Point taken. I think most of us agree both Neal and Thornton should be suspended.

Ryan, while I enjoyed reading your stuff, you envited more Pen bashing on our own blog.

Another reason not to come here.

Good day.

This 100%. Feels sad to say though. HB has been a habit for 5+ years.

Check your ego a bit and you have the potential to be a great writer. Right now your arrogance is tough for me to deal with (nothing personal). Our opinons of how we support and interpret the Penguins are just from two different planets.

This is a Penguins blog correct? You are better than inviting more hate to quite possibly the most hated team in the league.

I'm sure this means little to you Ryan, but I hope you get it one day and have tremendous success.

I find it odd that people are giving gunner a hard time over this blog... it was one of his best ones. The plug of a fellow hockey hurts writer was a bit much... and backing up the suspension system that would have neal serve 30 games was over the top, this blog wasn't bad... neal deserves to be suspended and decently... 5 games minimum. Gunner does have a bit of an ego and makes a few to many concrete statements of arguably arguable points, but that makes the blog more fun... I couldn't stand Cloutier when he blogged for the oilers but his blogs were fun to read and react to. Ultimately gunner's job isn't to put on a skirt and cheerlead, but to write about the team and generally he does a decent job... this blog included. and there wasn't even any fenclose mumbo jumbo!

I didn't say that. It was dirty. Still it's not on the same level of what Thorton did. Neal has a handful of dirty plays in his career. Marchand usually has a handful in a game. Marchand punched Maatta in the face in that game that went uncalled.

Regardless. I know it's not going to change your mind. You hate James Neal. We get it. Just wondering what you're opinion is of "The Broad Street Bullies" and how many scumbags they've employed over the years?

- madmike71

Not a fan of either particular team or player - but I feel what Neal did was much more reckless and potential for injury. You don't see someone kneeing another player in the head very often. Not condoning Thortons actions but much more common to see a player grab and haul down another player.
Any thoughts on why Orpic seemed to be so badly injured? Didn't look like he hit his head on the ice and didn't appear Thorton hit him overly hard.

I disagree. How many times do you see someone skate up behind an opponent that is engaged in conversation with a ref, slew foot them, and pummel them while they are defenseless on their back? Neither Marchand nor Orpik were in a position to defend themselves. It was equally dirty.

First, before anything gets misconstrued, Neal's play was indefensible. That being said thortons was worse. For starters thorton had more time to think things through when approaching orpik from behind, he also had the opportunity to not hop on orpik when he went to the ice, another chance to end it when he got on top of him, another after the first swing. All 4 times he chose to do the wrong thing. Neal made one incredibly stupid quick decision. Thorton made at least 4.
