When you start saying "you never know" and "a player we might consider a throw-in", I think you realize that at it's face, that was a lop-sided proposal.

After all, using the same logic in the other direction, one could just as easily say that the Habs see huge value in RoR, and so, you never know, maybe RoR for Subban, Beaulieu, and a first round pick is a reasonable trade.

And if they do they might overpay for him, just like they did for Gomez.

Leclair wasn't the best player when he was here, but boy did he turn it around once he left.

You can ask what you want for a player but you have to find someone to pay it if not Luongo would have been traded.

What we don't know is the behind the scenes stuff, what does ror want? hell what does Diaz want? an unsigned asset is not worth as much as a signed one no matter the skill level.

You don't think they could get a better offer elsewhere?
- braidan

More that he thought he could get with that group of nobodies, granted I'm just as biased. RoR would be one of my favorite players in the league if not for the contract issue.

Although it would be ironic if he was traded to Calgary

Any talk in the local news about contract talks and how they are going?
The quickest way out of town is if they think they can't sign you at what they deem acceptable, better something than nothing, trust me.

O'Reilly would be an excellent get for any team.

I still maintain that had there not been that bullpoop with clearing waivers, the Flames offer sheet last year was 100% defensible.

three days ago Edler goes out with a knee injury, looks indefinite, and even a quick scan of the local reporter's shows it looks like 4-6 weeks, possible mcl, so then Eklund reports Caps interested...jeepers, when making rumors up, isn't it wise to do even a little bit of research first?

I think I would take Monahan + few good picks instead of O'Reilly today....

No way. Tinordi is a lock in the organisation for MB plus I don't think Beaulieu will be on the move since it's the only puck moving defenseman we can rely on if there is injuries. Diaz + Dietz/Pateryn + 2nd for a soon to be UFA or 6.5M qualifying offer isn't bad but I think the Av's can get a better deal from a team like CGY (Brodie+ Baertschi?)
- Prusthemust

ooof....I'm a huge O'Reilly fan but that's a bit much. Maybe Baertschi but not Brodie as well.

Or MAYBE Brodie for ROR straight up.

Huh? I see Brodie as the toss in. Not remotely close to worth RoR.

There's no guarantee that, had the Flames had O'Reilly they would have been picking 6th overall. And by "a few extra picks" you mean a single 3rd which isn't that much.

And you'd be surprised how comparable rookie ROR and rookie Monahan are. In the long run I take Monahan but I don't think it's as clear cut as people might make it out to be.

He's having an awful season but I still think you're selling his value short here.

Regardless I don't see Flames management seeing him as a throw in in that scenario.

1rst + 2nd + 3rd, sure today I would take Monahan + pick but CGY pick would have been higher with ROR for sure

Brodie might get you ROR equipment. Brodie is still an unknown.

Why is this chat even going on right now when Ryan O'Reilly can't even be traded until February 28th?

That being said his defensive capabilities combined with his offensive output makes him a huge find for any team. He is only 22 and it is not absurd to say he could be a Bergeron quality player in his prime as well as a Selke trophy winner some day.

Never mind I take back what I said about Monahan's rookie stats being comparable to ROR, it's not even close points wise. Still think it was a defensible move.

A qualifying offer at 6,5M (not sure) can scare more than one GM...

There had been no wod all season and now with a completely different front office we really can't assume one way or the other. It is more up to what Roys long term plan is

Can we state Ryan O'Reilly as a 1rst line guy? For me, no...

A top 2nd line guy for sure. COL having Duchene and O'Reilly as a 1-2 punch perfect. Don't forget MacKinnon either

RoR can sign any contract he pleases. Until he hits rfa the QO isn't important. Afterwards though it gets more messy
