Orpik doesn't have to make that hit. He can ease up.

We talk about head injuries and how the game has changed and how guys don't ease up anymore. Well, that's part of it. There needs to because healthy respect put back in the game.

I'm sure plenty of guys eased up on Yzerman when Probert was hanging around.

And, again, we as Leafs fans should understand the power of a fight to protect our talent. We had Domi around for ages. One of the most kick-ass moments of the modern era was when Clark beat the snot out of McSorley for creaming Gilmour cutting through the middle (a clean hit).

Weird how I mentioned that lastnight.. I'm starting to think people are stealing my material!

if orpik hit kessel, or lupul or kadri like that.... the tune would definitely be different.

if orr did that to orpik..... it'd be ALL orpik's fault.

which if you believe Yeti, that's exactly what i'm saying, no need to read back for the truth.

Maybe he could have let up, I don't know. I think, at least for me, there's a line as far as hitting goes and this one falls just barely on the right side of it. I don't like to see guys come in from the side and catch a guy looking the other way, to me that's predatory. This was a north-south hit that was completely avoidable if Eriksson was watching where he was going. If we're going to say that you can never hit a guy who doesn't know you're coming then we might as well go the extra step and just take hitting out of the game altogether. Just my opinion.

Sloppy, too many penalties, exciting, frustrating...all over. We got two points, so all is well.

That said, we desperately need to learn to shoot more and get some scoring from Dmen and depth players.

I don't blame thornton for sticking up for his teammates but that was a horrible way to go about it. Not sure what precise point you two are argueing about and I have no bone in this fight anyways. Just find something to agree on because getting butthurt over this isn't worth it.

agree on the first part.... i was just having a discussion with fruitcakenipple, obviously his opinion and mine were different on what should have happened. i was asking questions gave a few loose examples......
Yeti piped in that i condoned what Thornton did to Orpik..... without reading what i actually said.... total troll move, then played ontario liberals and deflected trying to look like a hero.
and of course i took exception to it.... being it was a ref who constantly preaches about what they were guilty of.

Yeah Liles is all class. A great guy. Danger Ranger didn't play and I hope he never does again in a Leaf uniform. Fraser was poop tonight... I'd like to see Rielly take his spot tomorrow.

but it's nice to see him get played this time, not just called up.... he is total class

the contract sucks.... he should stick given bozak's been IR'd same pay, so a good chance for him.

We've only been begging them to put Liles in for 5 weeks or so. But hey, what do we know, huh.

Ahhh. He said something about Ontario being liberals?
That's kinda out of character I guess. Idk man, I'd just try to gauge what kind of mood he's in. Have to do that with the refs sometimes. I haven't seen him for the past little bit so maybe he's backed off? Meh... I'm going to bed. Night y'all

As far as the hit goes, it was a thing of beauty.

I'm just torn because I miss the era when players policed themselves. I do think the game is more dangerous now than it was then, especially for the talented players.

Would Gretzky, Yzerman, Sakic, et al. have played 2 decades in today's NHL? Let alone at an all-star productivity? I doubt it.

When we talk about the game being bigger and faster and more brutal these days, I think the conversation needs to take into account respect and self-restraint. How do you get a guy not to kill another player, even if he's within his rights to do so?

Great game from Gardiner tonight...looked like a Karlsson-lite..I thought Liles was solid as well, finishing +2.

how many games for Thornton? I'm gonna say 5

No way, I think they're going to throw the book at him. This one had shades of Bertuzzi. 10+

EDIT: Let me put a caveat on that. It has everything to do with Orpik's condition because that's what seems to matter to the NHL. If Brooks is fine then maybe you're right about 5.
