It is what it is with Staal. When he is on his game he is a good second pairing defenseman, when he is not, he is still an above average NHL player.

The problem with that is there really isn't a wide gap between the two, for him. There's no other level he can rise to; he's pretty middle of the road on the whole.

My sense is, he's struggling with his depth perception in the previously injured eye. It could explain some of his issues with tracking and accepting the puck.

and Staal and Girardi too, both played without visors for a looooong time

I am sure it's taking them both time to get used to
