Contract AAV's are going to continue to escalate. Besides the cap going up, with the new CBA and the contract length stipulations the only way to "outbid" the other guy is to offer more money. In the past teams could offer the lifetime contracts at the expense of AAV as the player had the safety net of 10+ years guaranteed $. The NHL and their infinite wisdom took that away so now teams are left with no choice but to raise the AAV of players. Henrik's deal is just the beginning of this escalation

You make a good point. It will result in more money per year than the fans will likely anticipate, leading to a frenzy of comments about overpaying. But, as you pointed out correctly, it is the only way with the new CBA. Ultimately, a market like MTL should be able to live at max cap and afford a Subban at 9-11M, no matter how crazy this sounds. The challenge that will remain is to avoid tying up too much money with key players, and not having enough for the rest of the roster.

I doubt that's a concrete rule. They're not going to pass over someone who makes the team better because he shoots the wrong way. If it's a bubble player, maybe that comes into play.

I'm sure WPG would be on fire. The point of the question was just to highlight that while we love to criticize the player, most of us would gladly take him on our team, even if it means trading our best d-man. Hell, I would even consider it. Because he is soon turning 37 years old, I would trade Chara for Subban and deal with the riots in Boston. It's a business.
