Yea, I have respect for the majority of the people I learned from through my years.

another thing that grinds my gears?
requiring years of experience for entry level positions. It's absurd.

Colin. you went to university right? how many in your class are you aware of that are actually working in their field?

Also, college skill sets will open far more doors than the knowledge gained in university.. plain and simple. I could go to work in any number of construction fields. not just civil engineering.

IF you can get a good job out of university, I agree, you are laughing.. but the success rate coming out of university is absurdly low. not worth the risk unless you have something to fall back on. the debt load is absurd. not everyone is cut out for university trained employment either. but they dont tell you that.

- Dozzer

But thats the point we were getting at earlier...its those who took english/history/social sciences majors who figured they'd have jobs lined up for them and the other tens of thousands with the same degree. It doesnt take a genius to figure out that you need to do something to stand out...I specialized in the field which I specifically wanted to get into, and to this point Im still working at gaining more experience outside of university in order to get in because what university offers for the most part isnt considered relevant experience, unlike colleges...so I hear you there. Its those who dont get this who give up and take shopping mall jobs as you put it.

Yup that's bozaking ridiculous. Thankfully I'll have seven years of research between my degrees so that often negates that argument in my field.

Probably the same guy on this board that insisted Kadri and Gardiner would be a huge overpayment for him.

See, I knew all this stuff going in... So I made sure to get as much experience as possible. Sadly, the best co-op I got was in highschool... but I also made sure to get involved in as many real-world projects as possible... luckily george brown was awesome for that(not the co-op, that was crap)... So I was helping a group run entrepreneurship classes, teaching people how to build business plans, etc, I took every opportunity to use my graphic design skills to build a portfolio, and I got myself into a class(that was hard as hell) in which your group is assigned a real world client, and you put together a marketing plan based on their objectives.

2 months after I graduated, I had a job, been here for over a year at this point.

And I also started my own company, just in case I didn't get a job. And frankly speaking, I could probably make more money with that... but this is more secure and counts as experience in my field.

But I didn't get the job because I followed the school's curriculum. I got it because I taught myself HTML, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc, and because I went out of my way to get experience. The actual "skills" my classes taught me, have been butt-(frank) useless.
