Biggest lie, IMO is that education= skills & intelligence.
About 0.000% of what you learn in university translates to your field, unless you're studying the sciences. At least with trades you learn and build the skills you're going to be using... and in many cases have an an apprenticeship program that will help you. Internships for business programs are cheap(or free, or even profitable for the company) labor, and you're worked to hell, without being given any tasks that could actually help you in the future.
Education: One of the many broken systems in our society. - Feeling Glucky?
oh its a cash grab nothing more.
the other issue i have with it is that very little of the profs are worth learnign from. now.. this isnt to say that all of them are in this boat, i am sure some actually wanted to teach, but a small minority.
those who can do, those who cant teach
there is a sad amount of truth to that |

Not true...what youre learning during your years in school is the ability to, well, learn at a higher level than you would anywhere else. Moreover, its your ability to research, write, express and understand ideas thoroughly with time constraints. Though I do fully agree that most degrees now a days are nothing but resume boosters, going to Uni has certainly helped me bring in extra cash and Ive used many tools which Ive gained through the experience. Though I also worked toward specific majors in relation to what I was hoping to achieve...so there is validity in saying that a BA in English/History aint doing anything for ya. |

Some specific jobs are terrible for employment. I heard that Ontario has enough teachers now that if we did not graduate another one for 10 years, we would still have too many.
Something has to give. Almost everyone I know has been affected by massive layoffs. I was at a table with 8 people for dinner yesterday and we all make the same or less than we did 8 years ago, and that is in literal terms.
There is just far less opportunity for far more people. That is why trades are a good idea. There is always demand.
... then again, I have to wonder if too many tradespeople will flood the market in the next 10 years. - Aetherial

I for one look forward to having multiple degrees and still earning less than the guy we call in to fix the toilet when it turns into a fountain |

Which one was it for you? - Yeti1181
college. but i had the job lined up before i went
i started out after highschool and just went to work.. started out at the bottom of the company i work for to this day.. became their youngest floor supervisor within 4 years so i decided.. what the hell.. i got a knack for this so i spoke with the owner and told him i was looking at possibly taking the C.E.T. program.
he told me he would hire me straight out of school if I did with my background knowledge of his plant.
been designing and estimating for him ever since. |

Hey Yeti didn't like the Alberta chat. I found it odd that he weighed in at that time, like that myself. But whatever..Specially with 3 other refs in the blog.
Timing was weird, Other than the remark about the Nuck fans, I didn't think we were taking shots at any one province or cultural community. |

Well you re being ignorant towards me cause I asked people to stop bashing other cities, provinces or countries. Do you have a problem with people being respectful? Nobody is here trolling right now but yet others are bashing others homes so not sure what trolling has to do with this. But please explain? - Yeti1181
opened up the thread.
Went to some page, maybe half-way through the thread.
First post I read is an obvious troll from a Colorado fan. He gets a warning and a discussion.
Why the F do we have to deal with these idiots. Ban them, ban their alts, and be done with it. Same for Leafs fans trolling other boards. |

Yes...but I guess what Im really saying is you could argue that someone with a degree has more potential paths, than does someone with a diploma in construction or police services or what have you. Nothing against colleges one bit, but my friends who've graduated have but that one specific skill set...which I do have to say is great that they got the hands on experience through co-ops etcetera...something universties could care less about. Give us your money then get out. |

He was taking direct shots at Alberta like he always does. The thread are not here to bash others places its for hockey and bashing other hockey teams not the city. |

Most of the time I either reach for the plunger, or just double flush.
If that doesn't fix it, I jut head down to the Winchester and wait for the whole thing to blow over... |

My brothers-in-law are general contractors so over the years I have got to know a few plumbers/electricians/gas-fitters etc.
Without fail, they all make more than me, work less, and take more holidays.
Yeah, they have to work in sh1tty (sometimes literally) conditions, but then dealing with the idiots in my office is no picnic either
