Sure trade Dion...Ranger can replace his minutes...
- Fruitcakenipple

Like said, we can talk about how great Dion is in our own zone but at this point if we don't find a way to play more hockey in the offensive zone then it doesn't matter what Dion does.

There really isn't anyone on the trade market that'd be a good boost to us right now.

Kulikov'd be nice but really without a top centre we're screwed. It's actually gotten really ridiculous.

- AngryWhiteMale

Go all in, balls deep and try for either, or both, of Pavelski and Girardi.

It'd take a lot. But they're the types of guys that we need

Meh Pavelski would be nice, but the fact is that to pull this together we need someone who can really command a game down the middle of the ice.

Put him on first line and he would do it I think. He's not the biggest guy, but he has some power to his game...

Thats the caveat... I don't know. With Jumbo Joe a UFA, and Pavelski and Couture wrapped up at $6m per next year, I think they're keeping him and abandoning Joe.... time will tell though.

Lmao trade Dion for Brad Richards so I can cry so much from laughter that the desert in phoenix turns into a tropical paradise and hockey becomes relevant

We need elite.

but it's so hard to find via trade that it's impossible not to over-pay

I will admit to a small amount of antagonization but my comment was more directed at a series of posts insisting that the leafs need someone who is "elite" and I was curious as to who he had in mind exactly.

You're missing the point. It's a generalization, not a specific target.

I see where you're coming from, I really do. Trading Phaneuf could "potentially" net a #1 C. But with that, you've completely hung this team out to dry.

The Suter deal in Minnesota is a prime example of what a #1 defenseman does to a team. Minny was struggling to make playoffs, and the defense was a bunch of no names and lesser names playing a team game. They'd often finish in the bottom 10 in the league after starting out with some ridiculous start. Sign Suter, next year Playoffs, Suter eats up almost 30 min a game, and is one of the best two-way defenders in the game. Along comes Brodin, they now have an instant top pair, with two good goaltenders and they look like one of the Top 5 teams out West. Easy.

The last how many cup winners had an outstanding top pairing. Anaheim had Niedermayer/Pronger, LA had Scuduri/Doughty, Chicago had Keith/Seabrook, Pittsburgh had a plethora of top defenseman in Scuduri, Gonchar playing his best hockey, a young Letang and Goligoski along with Orpik, they were deep. Boston? Chara/Seidenberg, and Detroit had Lidtsrom along with Rafalski and Stuart. Another stacked defense.

Sure, these teams had some amazing offense depth and 1 or more #1 centers, but they had deep, tough defense that made it difficult for other teams. Many of there best defenseman playing the most minutes in a game out of any non-Goaltender.

You don't fill one hole, and dig another. We already are stupidly thin on defense, and when injuries aren't plaguing the team, they aren't half bad. You get another big, Top 6 Center and you have an offensive core in the vein of Boston where it's just deep. Doesn't have to be elite.

I assumed he was trying to be constructive but if what he actually was trying to say was "we need a generalized center" aka "all of our centers aren't good enough" then I guess that one is my bad.

I want to say the Leafs need a Toews type player. A Selke finalist playing in the Top 6. And 3 Top 4 defenders.
