Honestly what's the point?

Selfishly I would like to see him go over and dominate, and help Canada regain the gold. But at the end of the day it isn't where he should be.

He's a bonafide NHLer, he needs to play in the NHL regardless of where the team is in the standings.

It's better for his development? How? Playing with worse players? Having success on a large stage? Here's a thought.....what if Canada doesn't win gold? What if he sucks? The expectations would be so high anything less of tons a points and a gold medal would be a failure.

Toss in the injury factor, lost wages, travel etc etc etc he probably doesnt even want to go.

I really don't like this small roster tryout ... Your basing your player selection on what players did against each other in the summer as apposed to mid season ?? And then against the watered down chl ?? I'm a little skeptical of the 16 year old chosen one being a lock ? How many 16 year olds can be effective against a team full of 19 year olds in Sweden ... Starting to think the Russians got sutter all drunk on vodka during the Russian series and this is the hangover result

Never heard of the kid .... At least not much mention of him here under my rock

There us a huge difference between a 16 year old and a 19 year old ... I have no doubt McDavid will be a star in the nhl one day but this is a different kind of situation

Flames website says Monahan will not be released for the World Juniors. I'm happy because I'm going to watch the battle of Alberta on the 27th so i can see him live.

And he's a different kind of player. Yes a lot of 16 yr old are over matched against 19 yr old. Not McDavid

Not sure what he's done to prove that he can play at a high level against top junior talent ... Yes he has good stats this year in the ohl but I just feel his time is not now to shine for Canada ... Hopefully I'm wrong

Well considering he led all players in the U-18 tournament in points with 14, as a 15 year old, and he's already playing in the OHL and putting up respectable numbers as a 16 year old i'm pretty sure he's proved himself enough. If you watch the kid play he's unreal, his puck possession and hockey smarts are through the roof.

any thoughts on why they didn't release him? I know the official answer will be that his development is better served at the NHL level...
but he wasn't on the invite list...was there a risk of being released for WJC and then not making the team?
boy would that be embarrassing...

I was a little disappointing actually...unless Sean specified that he wanted to stay with the group which is what they want to hear, I thought Feaster & Co. would make the decision for the player and send him down for a few games. Then again, keeping him around helps boost team productivity as I displayed in the blog, and that in turn boosts player performance which can yield higher value in the trade market for a certain few people

Could just be running through the script, but Monahan also said that his goal was to play in the NHL this year and that's where he wants to play. Management wants him to develop there and i'm sure the $100+ thousand he'd lose from going to the tourney sways his decision a little
