Excuses. We could come up with similar poop on any of the players that were chosen if they were not.

They made up their minds well before and this is just trying to "sell" the selections and omissions...

There is absolutely no way they can justify taking some of these guys and leaving others behind so they make something up. Nurse played just as well or better than most in that super series.

Yeah maybe Sutter has sour grapes. Didn't work out in Calgary, thought he was going to get the Oiler job...

Here we go again with all the world junior talk.

TSN pumps this thing up like it's a huge event when the reality is no one outside of Canada even knows that it happens. Even in a hockey mad country like Sweden where it's being played, it will probably get little to no coverage.

Yes it's a chance to see future NHLers but is it really all that relevant? For every NHLer that comes out of the tournment there are just as many players that go onto other things.

Just a money grab for TSN. Olympics is the only world tournament that means anything.

He should absolutely go for a whole bunch of reasons:

1. There's really no reason not to send him. The Flames aren't playing for anything but development this season.

2. He's never really played in games that mean something before. He was a star player on a terrible team in Ottawa and hasn't seen the playoffs in years (and it could be years more until he does).

3. It's a once in a career opportunity. When you talk to players who have played in this tournament, they all talk about it with a special fondness. In Canada kids grow up dreaming about 2 things... winning a Stanley cup, and playing for team Canada. Give him that experience.

4. While there he'd experience both the responsibility of leadership on a huge stage, and also the thrill of victory for a change. Canada may not be a lock for Gold this year, but they're definitely medal contenders and especially in the prelims, they'll see some big wins and some high scoring games. Why not ramp up Sean's confidence and see if he comes back guns blazing like he did at the start of the year.

5. For 3 weeks it would give someone else in the organization a chance to step up and showcase their ability (I'm looking at you Backlund). It also gives the team an opportunity to pull up a kid like Knight to see how he handles the big league.

The one potential downfall is that it might hurt his chances at the Calder to miss out on a dozen games or so... while this might be true, if the experience can ignite his fire and confidence again, maybe he comes back even better. Either way, I still think it's in his best interest to go.

Completely agree, however keep in mind that this is a 19 year old kid where the $$ and everything that comes with playing full time in the NHL could be more appealing than the WJC...Ive read up on a few interviews from players of his ilk and age in recent years who have expressed that they would rather play in the NHL and progress their careers than take a small step back to get the chance to play in said tourney. Not applicable to all kids, im sure, but they dont always think with their heads

This is true. ~12 games could be what... $115,000 for the kid? That's pretty solid incentive.

$110,000 would likely be peanuts though if he were to add World Jr gold to his resume.

I agree. A gold medal is more ammunition for an agent to get more $$ for their client.

How about staying in the NHL continuing to play well and winning the Calder? I can't see how WJC gold is going to mean a whole heck of a lot in 2 and a half years from now.

Pretty sure putting up 76 points in 78 games while scoring 34 times is why he got paid.

You missed the point, when they mention his name about Team Canada its not about his point production, its the clutch performerwhen the game is on the line.

Cant talk about an oiler player with out someone being defensive like he is being bashed.

I never took it as he got bashed. I think it's ludicrous to think that because he scored some goals in a Junior tourney that he netted a great NHL contract.

Maybe, maybe not but likely played a big role in some of his endorsements. Even if it had no effect on his contract it has helped his image. Hence made him more marketable.

The media loves brinign it up non stop about him, it appeals to the larger masses, that is why we still get garbage about Paul Henderson, which I cant stand.

Margainal hockey player, scored one big goal in his life, and has made a living of selling that moment for profit.

Brent sutter has never won anything outside of North America ... Both his world junior golds were in Canada and USA on smaller rinks ... And that won't change this year ....his style and type of player he likes is great for smaller rinks ... A guy like porier is one of the fastest skaters in juniors and is putting up numbers is great on the pk and a threat on the pk... Leaving him off is just plain stupid .... The scouting staff says they didn't want nurse because he won't simplify ... That's what d men do over here ... Simplify get it out quick ... But we aren't playing over here ... D men shouldn't be simplifying ... Too much ice to be keeping it simple ... But I guess that's all sutter knows is simple ...I hope I'm wrong and they win gold but I am skeptical of a lot of what they are doing ... And if they don't win gold it might look pretty bad when the elements these two guys left off were not used

Honestly what's the point?

Selfishly I would like to see him go over and dominate, and help Canada regain the gold. But at the end of the day it isn't where he should be.

He's a bonafide NHLer, he needs to play in the NHL regardless of where the team is in the standings.

It's better for his development? How? Playing with worse players? Having success on a large stage? Here's a thought.....what if Canada doesn't win gold? What if he sucks? The expectations would be so high anything less of tons a points and a gold medal would be a failure.

Toss in the injury factor, lost wages, travel etc etc etc he probably doesnt even want to go.
