Rielly has been fairly terrible in his own end all year. He passes to teammates who are in awful positions instead of making a smarter player to get the puck out of his own end all the time. That's the major complaint I have with him right now. It's probably better for his development to be playing in the NHL right now but it's hurting the team. - daeth
Yup. Some just don't want to see it.
number of ES minutes per goal scored against.
Rielly - 14.5
Franson - 20.8
Fraser - 23.1
Ranger - 28.7
Gardiner - 34.3
Gunnar - 34.7
Phaneuf - 40.0
And the funny thing is, Franson played a lot of time with Rielly. His numbers get drastically better without Rielly. Fraser actually had pretty good numbers too before last night, when he got harpooned with 2 goals playing with Rielly, and with the limited games he's played, it killed his numbers.
It's not a hack on the kid. He just needs more time. I think it should have been in juniors. |

In 2yrs time yes...Sadly that likely means starting a new missing the playoffs streak... |

Geez u really killed the (frank) out of this thread... ..
Nice code... - Fruitcakenipple

I think hanging in there for the most part is a positive, as the Sharks done a lot worse to a lot of teams. Some positives to be taken out of it.
I think the bounces comment is a little played out though. - david22

No, they will get healthy and get back to winning.
Just need a spot, I think they played better tonight regardless of the lineup.

True okay lets blame rielly. Were losing because of rielly now, okay so 5/6 of the defense sucks now. Thank God for Dion |

me and a certain Canucks mod don't see eye to eye. and it's true, Canucks fans don't take well to criticism. They think their shyt don't stink. Truth is, the Canucks are nowhere near as good as their fans think they are, and have been.
Funny the talk of the Leafs feasting on an easy schedule this season. Did you know that in the 6 years prior to this season, only 3 times in those seasons did another team make the playoffs from their division? And by that, I mean, 3 seasons they were the only team, the other 3 only one other team made it. They were playing 30 games a season against the worst teams in the league. No wonder they won their division, and won presidents trophies. They weren't playoff chokers, they weren't as good as their record showed to begin with. |

Dion has truly been a stud, no doubt.
But yes, Rielly is costing the Leafs games. Absolutely.
The numbers are decent for most of them, short of Rielly actually. And they're actually pretty good for ALL of them other than Rielly, when you ignore the time played and goals scored against while playing with Rielly. Great young player. Awesome. Not ready for the NHL though. |

Tie this stat in with relative strength of opponent and the picture will be clearer and Phaneuf will be exposed as a machine. |

Yes

If the injuries continue we won't make the playoffs regardless, no since plugging a hole and losing assets if the whole boat is falling apart or we get healthy quick and get some lines rolling and let them try to get some time together. |

Phaneuf has been an absolute beast last year and this year.
Defensive performance is tough to measure. I was thinking an interesting way of putting together another stat league wide would be to take the goals against, ES, tie that in with ES time played, then weight it against team sv%. Thought that might be an interesting way to try to even the playing field.
So basically, take the goals scored against. Take a league average sv% of goalies. Adjust the goals against up or down based on how far above or below a teams sv% is. Then divide by ES TOI. If you follow. |

Its not about losing assets its about making smart trades.
Kulemin could be expendable
Gardiner+ for a guy like strome, couturier, b.schenn, lindholm
The Liles for Gleason trade i want to happen, its a low risk move
Deals that we gain key pieces back in a kulemin, we either make a good gamble move by acquiring a young top 6 piece preferably a center for now or future, and a low risk move of getting a shut down defender. Not major moves breaking the bank but you get it |

Gleason yes, if we do any trade it's got to be for a D
I think we keep Kule and get him playing with Clarkson
But we need some health and some heart. |

If they're getting scored on while doing so then yes it will. Its meant to isolate their performance defensively. |

Just a suggestion If we need some capspace gone, itd make the trade with the pens and try and acquire pouliot or despres
Gleason i hope it gets done
If gardiner goes, i hope its for a young center man like the ones i mentioned or is there more? I just based that on teams who would be interested in him that have something useful for us |

didnt think the leafs played terribly tonight. they were beat by a much better team.
Still, this team needs an imposing centre more than ever. I have no problem with Bozak as a 2nd line centre as we know we have one line that's good to go. Without a decent centre Clarkson won't be utilized properly and Raymond will be contained.
Dion and Kadri will provide us with a pretty solid return. Personally, the only reason we can talk about how good Dion is in the D zone is because we don't spend enough time in the other team's end. That has to change. The offensive numbers he does get are secondary assists that Kessel & JVR produce. His $ demands aren't in line with his offensive production.
Kadri doesn't have the character, and may not develop the maturity in a town like Toronto, so let's just cash in and look elsewhere. I know Kesler's injury prone, but if we could land him and perhaps Bieksa then it'd be pretty smooth sailing.
Aside from that I'm really not convinced that we'll find a real solution with the west being so tight that nobody's realistically looking to move anyone of use. |

You want to trade the only defenseman who didn't play horribly tonight?
And you think Kadri + gets you Bieksa and Kesler?
