So the Wild mascot confuses me. He's not a real animal. He's a made up one?

Am I the only one who thinks the claim of L Schenn being slow are greatly exaggerated?

He seems to catch up with guys well enough to run them into the boards. And he kept up with a forward or two last game trying to break into our zone.

- wolfhounds

No, he's not Pavel Bure, therefore he is slow.

I'm still trying to figure out why the Blue Jackets' mascot is green.

I think it's more that he gets out of position looking for big hits and thus is a step behind the forwards. If he was super fast he could catch up with them. I think his speed is average. Which means as long as he is positionally sound he's fine - otherwise he looks like a bull charging to catch up from behind the play...

It is to some extent, however I still wouldn't want him to be paired with Gill except on PK

I think an even bigger beef with LSchenn is positioning.

As in, LSchenn goes for a big hit or an ill timed pinch, gets caught out of position, and doesn't have the speed to erase the mistake.

I could be wrong about my interpretation about LSchenn's speed criticism.

- jmatchett383

"Stinger is the official Mascot of the Blue Jackets. Stinger is a 6 foot 9 inch bright green bug that walks amongst the crowd during the games and skates on the ice between periods while wearing a Blue Jackets' jersey. The image of Stinger was on the original Blue Jackets' jerseys. The Blue Jackets have since distanced themselves from Stinger, removing him entirely from the jerseys beginning in the 2005 season."
Apparently they can't figure it out either.

Sounds reasonable. And it makes one think of that wise advice: play within yourself.

Of course some are going to ignore a few letters there and go to a wholly different place...

Not the first sports team to make something like that up.

I've lived in South Jersey for half of my life now, and I've never seen a Rivershark anywhere close to Camden.

He certainly does have a habit of taking himself out of the play by looking for the big hit, though he seems to be getting better with this the last few games.

I still think Luke can be a solid top 4 shutdown guy once he learns to play a more controlled game.

The cannon is cool, I did like that (only heard it once when I was there, though). But my friend and I just stared at this green bug skating around and couldn't figure it out.

He has average speed...it's his first two-to-three strides that are below average, as well as his fluidity in "turn-and-go" situations.

As was said, it's not a killer if he reads plays properly and maintains proper position.

Dude...there's a big building in Camden that houses several acquatic animals. I'm sure some animal rights group could (or has in the past) release a few of them into the river.

Developing defensemen can be like developing a starting pitcher.

Sometimes, it takes a bit longer.

i wouldn't mind seeing hal gill worked into the mix more often. i thought he was pretty decent when he got into the lineup.
- hammarby31

When G-NN (or maybe Luke) get injured then Gill will play.

I guess they could play Gill with Mez or Gusty.

I would agree with this. 99% of NHL players are better skaters than 99% of people in the world. (I'm just making up this stat but it sounds good)

Schenn will always lack the foot speed to make up for his bad positioning. But there are many other defensemen who have played in this league who used good hockey sense and positioning to make up for a perceived lack of foot speed. Schenn, at 24, still has time to make these adjustments. And it is not like it happens every time, or even all that often.
