Leddy is doing just fine, albeit in a more minor role level than some may have expected him to be at right now. And what he gives the Hawks is that 3rd left side D man with blazing speed - no team in the NHL can match the speed the Hawks have on the left side of their blueline.

And the Hawks are patiently grooming the kid to step into Oduya's position in a year or 2. Compare that to the way the Maple Leafs are bungling a kid on their D like Jake Gardner and forcing a 19 year old like Morgan Reilly to play minutes because he can really skate but can't yet deal with the defensive zone responsibilities of an NHL defenceman. And that's right after rushing and eventually screwing up a high draft pick like Luke Schenn.

Patience is king with young defenceman.

Exhibit 1) Jim Benning

and 1 A) Fred Boimistruck

both high round picks by Toronto that were thrown to the wolves straight out of junior and I KNOW Rick J remembers these two

How could I ever forget Fred Boimstruck Philberto?

Plays on a Memorial Cup team in Cornwall with Dale Hawerchuk, Scott Arniel, Marc Crawford etc. And the Maple Loafs decide Boimo is another Bobby Orr and throw him to the wolves at 18 years old. Five years later he finishes his career with the Brantford Motts Clamatos.

Leafs screwed up so many young kids it is ridiculous - Gary Nylund was another one.

Although he's 24, and not just out of juniors, I hope something similar doesn't happen to Raanta.

....still laughing at that Rick...yes looking back i was shocked to see Boimo only lasted parts of 2 seasons with those AWFUL Leafs' teams.

Benning carved out a decent career...but the Leafs had a habit of phucking up a lot of young d-men...Drake Berehowsky's another that comes to mind...although he was able develop into a serviceable NHL'er.

To STL re: Raanta...shouldn't happen. We have an established number 1 and therefore Raanta will not need to do much heavy lifting. He should be fine.

Owner Harold Ballard ran the carnival there for about 20 years, his GM's were puppets.

Did you know coach Q was the first player the leafs took in the '78 draft - #21 overall.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w...le_Leafs_general_managers

Punch Imlach and Gerry McNamara....Punch had lost the team and phucked up the whole org when he traded fan fave and GLUE GUY Lanny McDonald away.
That episode messed the Leafs up for a few years until the rebuild began with Wendel Clark in the mid-80's.

Punch and Pully were two peas in a pod too. They only did what Harold and Dollar Bill told them to do.

PHUCK PUNCH IMLACH

Punch Imlach was named Toronto general manager prior to the 1979–80 season and immediately clashed with team captain Darryl Sittler.[25] Imlach wanted to move Sittler to another team, but the player refused to waive his no trade clause. Imlach responded by trading teammates friendly to Sittler instead.[6] On December 28, 1979, Imlach dealt McDonald to the Colorado Rockies, along with Joel Quenneville, in exchange for Wilf Paiement and Pat Hickey. The deal came as a surprise even to Toronto's head coach.

Whenever I get frustrated with Leddy's development, I just remind myself that he's the same age as Dahlbeck, Johns and Svedberg. By that metric, he's light years ahead of the competition.

Ballard and Dollar Bill always resented the fact that they had to pay their players more than a couple of hundred a week. They were dinosaurs in a sport that was rapidly changing day by day and had no desire to adapt to the times.

As long as Maple Leaf Gardens, a.k.a. 'the Cashbox on Carlton' was full for every Leafs game...Ballard laughed all the way to the bank.

Indeed...but at least in Toronto...home games were on t.v...but because the money rolled in no matter what 'Pal Hal' did...he had little incentive to improve the club.

And Imlach did win 4 Cups as Leafs' Coach/GM in the 60's...but in his 2nd go round with the Leafs in the late 70's, his time had passed.

I believe that was back in the day of the original six team league. I know they won one when Ted Lindsay was playing.Edit: They did win one in 1967.

At least Toronto had that. I only had Bob Elston and after him Lloyd Petit to listen to on the radio. Not that listening to those two to was a bad thing, they were two of the best.

Don't remember Elson with the Hawks, but didn't particularly like him with the Sox: too laid back and understated, especially compared with Jack Quinlan on the north side.

Petit was the best.

Don't know about him with the Sox because I at least could watch them on TV, but for calling a hockey game Bob was great.
