Is it just me or is Bernier getting worse?
- Yeti1181

I think it's a dominos effect. The goalie knows he has to stand on his head to give the Leafs a chance. That puts too much pressure on them. Goalies don't just turn to poop overnight, it's the defence.

He did say last night that teams rarely score off the rush now. So at least he admits his system is poop.
- Arctic_AARDVARK

His system has nothing to do with being a rush team. He's repeatedly stated that's not what he wants.

That's the issue though... with guys like Kessel, JVR, Lupul, Raymond ect they are built like a rush team. They don't work hard enough consistently enough to win.

Yes and I believe it the coach responsibility that works for the team not just want he wants.

yeah, that 5 hole was stinky....but they are giving up way more odd man rushes and cross seem passes than they were before. That's where the majority of the extra goals are coming from.

Team clog up the neutral zone against the Leafs. That's why the passes don't work.

- I don't care if they are a rush team or not, what ever works. That seems to work for them

- I want to see them compete harder.

- their defense has been horrendous lately. Too many odd mans and cross seem passes

I liked their game against Washington last week. (frank), go back to giving up 50 shots, who cares..... as long as there isn't breakaways, odd man rushes and cross seem passes.

They've got 2 guys that can skate it out with relative easy, but aren't allowed. The forwards are flying the zone too early trying to start the rush, but it's not working. Need to work harder.

So allow 50 shots and don't pass the put laterally

I think you just figured out the winning formula.

I don't care how many shots they allow, I care about the quality of shots they allow.

They are allowing less shots recently, but mush larger amount of high quality shot.

I remember a game against Ottawa where Reimer made 50 saves a few seasons ago.

They took shots from the outside with no traffic in front. Easy save for any goalie.

Would you want the Leafs take have 40 shots on goal, in which theyre Jason Blake shots where our guys shoot right at the goalies chest with a soft wrister from 50 feet out?

Or would you rather 30 shots with good scoring chances?

Why would you be worried if our team is giving up shots from the outside thats an easy save for our goalies/

Leafs were winning when that was happening...... lately they've given up less shots, but more quality shots. That is not the answer. Limiting the shots isn't the problem, limiting the quality scoring chances are.

Exactly.

Id be fine with 45 shots with low quality chances, than 30 shots with high scoring chances

I'm not saying there's not a difference between high and low quality shots. But allowing more than 30-40 shots is an indicator of lousy puck possession. I don't think it's a good strategy to allow teams like Washington to put up 50 shots, especially when they have the best sniper in the league. No good team allows that many shots and it's crazy to think it would be a winning strategy. I hate to say it but the Leafs need to play more boring hockey and take their chances more efficiently. They have a ton of skill so they shouldn't need to always either be on the attack or be pinniped in their own zone. Like Kyper said during second int, they need to slow things down a bit at times and get more organized.

The leafs have been called the fasted team in the League, "slowing it down" is not the way to go. You need to play to your strength. When they outskate the other teams they are successful. when they stop skating you get what you see the last half dozen games.

They slowed it down in the 3rd against pitts, how'd that work out?? They outskated them, outchanced them for 2 periods and then changed their approach and it went to poop.
