First of all, if you are taking a shot, you are clearly in possession of the puck, controlling it and the play. Again, a desperate dive for the puck shouldn't equate to possession.

In any case, you're taking out the other guy, not allowing him to even have a chance at recovering the puck.

Secondly, I think there are good reasons to penalize high sticks on the follow through. My understanding is that USA Hockey does not follow the exemption for high sticks on the follow through. So it's not like the NHL is the only precedent here.

Incidentally, that Gretzky high stick on Gilmour that we all like to whine about so much could be argued to be a follow through. In fact, Fraser alleges that Gilmour himself told him it was a follow through immediately after being clipped.

I'm really not sure what upsets you so much about my opinions for a rule change.

Have I offended you in some heinous and unforgivable way or what? It honestly seems you're more offended that I'm simply trying to engage you in a discussion than anything.

I get what your agenda is here and it doesn't involve actually debating or discussing anything, but I guess that's really more my fault for trying.

I just don't agree. If you are trying to play the puck and manage to do so then a trip is an inadvertent result of the play, not the intent of the play. I'm not sure how long you've been watching hockey for but this rule has only seemed to bother you for 24 hours or so.

How would you possibly know that?

For the record, I've felt it was a stupid rule for longer than I've been posting here. It's not the first time I've ever brought it up publicly, but hell if I can remember what I said or when i said it. I guess you can dig through the archives if you're really that concerned about it.

In any case, we're only talking about it because it's fresh on our minds now. Recent events bring the issue to the forefront.

If a Leaf got away with the same, it would still be legal by a rule that would still be, IMO, wrongly conceived. But I doubt many people would be wanting to talk about it if it didn't have an impact on anything.

What do you want me to do? Yap about rule changes in August?

So why were you calling it an obscure rule then that only NHL officials knew about? Something doesn't add up.

You're absolutely right. So what?

Yeah, recent events tend to trigger opinions. It's a Hockeybuzz message board, for crying out loud. Of course, we're only going to discuss things that are immediately relevant.

I suspect that if any of us were working for the NHL on the rule change committee, we'd probably think about these things far more.

I apologize if you feel I haven't dedicated sufficient time towards this cause to prove my commitment. At the end of the day, it's just a game. I'm sure we all have opinions on how to improve it. That doesn't mean I need to set up a not-for-profit foundation to lobby the NHL full time.

Whether a trip is inadvertent or not doesn't matter...it's still a trip. No one INTENDS to trip someone.

And it's it's pretty bang bang as to what happened first...the trip or the contact with the puck. That exact play gets called a trip all the time...so it's very frustrating.

We're just in a very bad stretch with the refs right now. They're killing us.

This season is trending so poorly that it won't be long before the team will be sold off for a pittance and relocated. Then the Seattle Maple Leafs will win the cup just as a final kick in the nuts.
