The islanders are apparently pursuing or Perseus miller (if it's old, which I hope) according to hornick

By all things holy if they trade for miller, unless he an Vanek both resign and we win a playoff round I swear I will stop watching this team this year

We would easily say bye to Nelson/Strome/Reinhart/Pulock and another decent prospect

Don't do it Garth... I don't think Roy could get this poop defense and team to the playoffs.

they have marincin, musil, and gernat as well. oilers have pretty good defensive prospects, but i'd pick your farm over theirs.

If that don't do the trick than don't bother with him.

I'd have to fully say yes to this even tho we are subtracting from our weakness of defense... but that first rounder needs to be a conditional 2nd or 3rd rounder that turns into a 1st depending on if Miller re-signs

I wouldn't trade any of that for Miller- they'd get one of the two goalies and the other 1st round draft pick over the next two years. That's it. He's not worth more than that. That's why I'd rather try one of the teams who have two and see if they will part with one- it probably wouldn't even cost us THAT much for Hiller, just for one example. All of that said, we need a big, mean, talented defenseman....a guy like Reinhart is hopefully going to be five years from now. We need that WAY MORE than we need a netminder. There's not even a close second to that GLARING need, which should have been addressed a LONG time ago.

Exactly...this would be absolute top shelf I'd offer for this guy- and I'd still rather see if we can get a Hiller, or Anderson from Ottawa, or someone like that first, before I'd even part with all of this for Miller.

The boys showed up last night, played as hard as they could, and still came up short, which is an improvement over the last couple of games, anyway. I think that I have had an epiphany as to what the problem is, though- well not what the problem is, but rather how I can describe what I think is wrong, which I haven't been able to do up to this point, because of my lack of technical hockey knowledge.

Basically, here is a game plan that works: unless you have a clear opportunity to pass the puck, you dump it up the boards and out, and then you dump it down the ice. The two forecheckers dig it out of the corners, and then you cycle until someone breaks free, at which point you try to use your passing skills to set up a play. Your defensemen pinch when there is a clear opportunity, otherwise they play defense as it's written up in the manual. You block shots, always immediately moving the puck to the boards afterward, for the purpose of moving it out and down the ice.

Here, in contrast, is what your New York Islanders do: pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass, pass. All the time- falling down, behind their own net, with two guys on them, across the ice at their defensive blue line , when they SHOULD shoot ......pretty much any time is the right time to try and pass the puck to someone else. Just for one example- if the first Islander to the puck behind the net had the idea in his head to simply try and blast the puck out of there around the boards, instead of spending at least one second looking around for someone to PASS it to, Washington would not have scored the second goal that tied the game last night.

That time they spend thinking, when they should just be moving the puck over and out, is WHY they are a disaster, far more than personnel issues, in my opinion- although, as some of us have said, Poulin is a backup and nothing more. I'd much rather see this other kid between the pipes until we get a goalie; at least he can move. But other than that, the bottom line is you simply cannot play that way- it might be "fun", or whatever, to try and play that way, but I'd like to think that winning would be a lot more fun....just saying....

For what it's worth:

@ehornick: Bruce Garrioch: #isles pursuing Ryan Miller (who would need to waive no-trade) http://t.co/Y6KrvhSTD2 #sabres #NHL

- NewYawkIslandez

Great idea. Throw away more assets for a guy who wants no part of playing on the team just to squeak into the playoffs as an 8 seed. Deal makes no sense.

This team never learns. Instead of bringing in a proven coach, we are going to give up our future for a guy that can walk.

None. Especially now. 7 games under .500 with this ludicrous December schedule coming up. It's a lost season. Take your top 5 pick and use it for a player that's signed in offseason but Ryan Miller isn't making this a playoff team

hypothetically thinking....

Since the Isles will be in the coliseum next year, and Wang only spends to/around the cap floor, what makes us think we won't be in a similar position for next year's draft. I keep hearing next year's draft is loaded thru the 1st rd and this year's draft is weak. I would rather give Buffalo the pick this year instead of next, because honestly I do not see this team improving next year only because it will be the same players minus Regin, PMB, Carkner, Amac, etc and filled in by rookies of Strome, Lee, etc. That's to much to ask for rookies in their 1st year. Unless the pick this year is top 3, I would rather Buffalo have it instead.
Keep in mind the biggest IF is Vanek

I make that trade every day of the week and twice on Sunday. If the chemistry was that fragile then they have the wrong players here.
- Dan Petriw

When you dont have glaring problems in the other two areas of your team, goaltending & defense, yes, I agree, you make this trade. There are more pressing needs, unfortunately.

The hole is getting deeper tho and the walls are close to caving in, all around on this season.

Miller is going to make very little difference with these constant defensive breakdowns. I hope this is not Garth just trying anything to hold onto his job. Makes no sense in bringing anyone in that can walk.

Crazy to think this team is actually closer to last overall (6 points) than it is from a playoff spot (8 points). A Shift in Power!

So let's say the trade is made and we have Miller. At 34 what kind of money would Miller want? I'd say max 3 years at 3 million.

You can't be serious. $3m? He's going to want 6-7 years at at least $6M per. And he'll get close to that from some desperate team.

That kind of money goes to someone in there prime. He's also not a top goaltender any more however still great. IMO he should get any more money past 38 except 1 year deals.

I think you're right. Problem is, the league doesn't work that way. Guys are consistently getting big money deals into their 40's.
