I was impressed with Strait before the injury last year. He has not been the same. The fustrating thing with this D is how two guys go to one guy leaving other team wide open in front of the net. I get they do not have the size to play a mean game. This team does not have a bunch of 18 year old dman though where they should be running around without a clue.

It's been terrible fundamental defense. The OT goal was a prime example. Hammer decides to not force Ovie outside and backs too far off him thus allowing Ovie to cut inside and shoot from a high percentage area. This has happened all year long and are mistakes Vis will NOT make.

As for Strait, I think he was rushed back too soon at the end of last season. There's no way they should have brought him back and then matched him with Crosby. He's not a true top pairing guy, but on this team he is.

What would you like to talk about today? How about what Garth is wearing today or what his likes or dislikes are?

A lot of that has to do with the coaching.

I don't think we'll make any deals period if the cost is high. It's a funny thing that last years success changed what we expected Snow to do. The mantra from the get go was patience, develop from within, add inexpensive pieces to bridge us to the prospects. Suddenly after the playoffs we all talked about adding a top pairing dman and goalie, but that was our plan not theirs. Their's apparently remains the same...keep plugging away..wait for the prospects to take their roles.

- mighty13duck

agreed....100%. MOST of that has to do with coaching. It's also the coaching that causes our fowards to constantly get trapped deep due to the system, leaving our sub par dmen to defend odd man rushes.

I know a lot of guys are down on Strait but if you were to define just what this defense has been missing, I think the answer would be grit and toughness. Love him or hate him, Strait is our grittiest and toughest dman by far. He's more aggressive on other teams entering the zone, sort of the opposite of what Hammer and Amac have been this season.

We all know Vis is the best dman on this team so that's not even debateable. While the two of them don't make us a 'good' defensive team, there's no debating that cutting the icetime of our present defensive squad can do nothing but help.

This team has plenty of other problems right now, but I'd say their absence has been numero uno. The other is someone needs to kick our second line in the arse and wake them the hell up.

- keaner17

Where have you seen strait be gritty or tough? The guy was not that great for us and gritty and tough were the furthest thing from my mind when thinking about him. We are eleven points out of a playoff spot. I have a hard time believing that brian strait would propel us to a playoff spot. Not even the defensive contributions of vis could do that. He was is our best d man but there is much much much more wrong with this team then them missing.

I speak for myself but I think a lot of us expected us to be competing more than we are. I expected big things this year, coming in with a ton of momentum.

Isles can use a Larry Robinson type to teach these dmen. It's not just Cappy it's Thompson as well. They need good vet dmen to go with guys like Hamonic and good coaches.

I don't think we'll turn it around but I think you're being a bit overly critical of Strait if you don't think he's a tough camper. That's his best attribute and he's easily the toughest dman on this team (not saying much though)
