Zajac said he heard it from Jagr after game for not scoring on all chances he had and he's been demoted below Zubrus in linemate status. - dmarsden2988
So Jagr is relying on nobody on that line now ! |

Props to DeBoer. Despite his unconditional love for Harrold and Marty, and uninspired coaching, somehow he has this team (which let's not kid ourselves, is bad) at .500.
Well, technically we have 5 more OT losses so we're 11-16, but let's just give him this. |

i know deboar mentioned that schneider started tonight partly because devils play the habs next and brodeur is from montreal
so is that him saying if it wasnt for the habs game brodeur would have started tonight? |

It's him being a female dog and not having the balls to tell Marty he is sitting. |

Got in from the game. My first thought seeing the plays develop live is even more of what I have thought much of the year.
1) Why don't our forwards and once in awhile (gasp!) our d-men carry the puck across the blue line down the middle when it is available? We always veer to the sideboards when we carry the puck across or pass it to bad angles rather than try to make a play through the middle. Yeah, that can lead to turnovers but with Greene, Zid, Gelinas and either of Merrill/Larsson, there is plenty of mobility to cover for mistakes.
2) It's amazing how in OT all of a sudden when we are guaranteed a point the D are allowed to rush the puck...which is something that could be a team strength with 4 d-men who can actually skate. And, gasp! look what happens when someone rushes the puck with speed into the offensive zone and players criss-cross...it gets the goalie moving laterally, and amazingly we score!
And yeah I get it, we don't have the most talent in the world. But Jagr is scoring. Elias is a multi-30 goal scorer and he hasn't lost any skill. Ryder has scored 30 a few times. Brunner has the talent to score off the rush. Zajac has the talent to score 15-20. Zubrus should be able to get 15.
The bottom line, this team should score more than it does, and could do just that...without sacrificing much in the way of defense at all. The attempt to win every game 1-0 is costing us against teams we should beat. And I know we had chances tonight...some were given to us. But still, even with big chances, we don't force the goalies to really move side to side often enough to make the big saves. The one time we did it to Enroth tonight we scored. It should happen more often. Even defensive-minded teams like Boston allow their more skilled d-men to rush the puck and carry it into the high slot. Chara scored the game-winner yesterday against the Rangers from the high slot. Gelinas could easily do the same thing. Bottom line, the team would be better and the young players would develop at a more accelerated rate with a coach who lets them make plays and take some risks. As long as PDB is the coach, you're not going to see JJ or Tedenby develop, and the growth of the young D will probably be somewhat stunted as well. I'm really happy we won tonight, but seeing them live confirms to me what I've already been feeling. This is a strong team personnel-wise, deep with mobile D, and excellent goaltending. There is no reason for them to be playing for a shutout or bust every game. |

Bernier is another guy with good scoring touch who rarely gets to show it. I know he catches flak on here...some of it deserved in terms of underperforming. But I'll say this, the guy looks to me like he is always trying. He forechecks and he throws his body around. He hustles defensively too even if he isn't the best backchecker in the world. |

If Ryder can pull together some semblance of what he was in the past, this team would be a lot better. |

I'm a bit worried opening the game up against better teams, especially faster ones. I think we end up chasing the puck far too much in open games and not able to dictate the play.

I can understand that. I don't want it too wide open either. Just where forwards are somewhat cognizant of getting in scoring positions on the rush and on the forecheck. It seems like even when we cycle, the highest man is more cognizant of defense than offense even when we possess the puck. |

And at this point, Schneider needs to start two-thirds of the games. .927 and 1.72 beats .910 and 2.20. Marty has been generally pretty solid, at times spectacular since his rough start. But there's zero question who the better goalie is and who gives the team the best chance to win if the offensive support is balanced out. Which it is bound to be eventually. |

As bad as we have been...and some of it has been downright bad...we are amazingly one point out of a playoff spot and 4 points behind the nearest wildcard spot. |

I noticed that too. I think the high man needs to be deeper in the slot. From what I've seen it seems DeBoer likes that guy high so that he can keep the play in the zone. When the other team tries to reverse the puck to the weak side, our high man is in a good position to pressure the puck. I don't think it would change that if he was deeper and it still puts him in a good position to get back quickly on defense. |
