Ok ponder this then... Downie is a ufa, B Schenn makes 850k this season and is a RFA at the end of the season. Think Schenn won't make close to 4? Giroux is getting a 5 million dollar raise next season, Adam Hall is a UFA, Steve Mason makes 1.6 a season, he's gonna get a raise at the end of the season when his contract is up, Emery is a UFA at the end of the season, so they need to look for a backup goalie. So think twice about blindly saying just give overrated Phaneuf a contract that could cripple the Flyers long term without knowing the numbers. Lots of players are in line for raises NEXT season, not in "two plus" seasons when the cap will be higher. Phaneuf isn't worth 7.5 million just because Timonen and Meszaros will be off the books next season. That available cap room is already spoken for and some.

Schenn won't make that much more money - probably a couts-like deal. Mason will probably demand some coin but he is RFA so its not like he holds all the cards. The rest of the guys you mentioned are smaller contracts anyways (downie, hall). Flyers are not in THAT dire a cap situation next season.

Phaneuf night in and night out plays on a bad team and against opponents top lines. He plays the most minutes on the team, is only 28 and puts up a respectable +/- for what thats worth. I just read an article a couple days ago about how he shut down crosby. The only reason flyer fans don't like him is cause he gets under our skin... which when you think about it is exactly the kind of player the flyers and fans like to have. If Phaneuf regains his shot from his early days with the flames he'd be more than worth the money - but even if he doesn't he's worth at least $7 million in todays market. I promise someone will pay it - I hope its the flyers if they think he'd improve the team.

I guess you glanced over the $5 million raise that is coming to Giroux then? That's not a small contract. The Flyers aren't in "cap hell", but your argument about just pay Phaneuf whatever he wants because he's the best available and the Flyers are in a great cap situation because Timonen and Meszaros are gone next year is not well thought out, to say the least. You would like to make Phaneuf a top 5 paid defenseman just because he's the best available? That's just insane. He's not even a top 10 or even top 15 defenseman. Signing Phaneuf for 7 years/53 million would be the dumbest contract Holmgren has given out so far.
