Any team can look very good if their tender is playing amazing. Ask the Leafs and Habs.

Montreal and the Leafs don't look very good. They are middle of the pack teams who are sitting exactly there, in the middle of the pack.

That's is my point. Great tending can make up for a lot of mistakes. But when the tender cools off, those mistakes leave the team showing its true colours.

The last game vs the pens the leafs game out hard. It looked like Carlyle lit a fire under their asses and he probably did. I think that caught the pens off guard and that's why they were up 4-1. But some of those goals against fluery were pretty weak. You could even say they he would normally have stopped them. So it could have been 2-2 after two. This suggests to me that despite the lead they had, they weren't exactly dominating the game. The leafs relied on their speed and skill to get the lead, but once they became tired the pens took advantage of their weak style of play. I honestly think if they are going to continue to play this "off the rush" style of play they need different players who are more suited to that style. These lopsided games suggests that other teams have found a way play against them.

Their defense leaves a lot to be desired. Gryba, Borowiecki (who??), Corvo (really?), Phillips who's now 35 years old... Karlsson who's now specializing in turning the puck over in his own end. You have Marc Methot who's solid every night and that's about it.
Cowen looks like Tyler Myers lately. And not the good Tyler Myers.

Couple that with Anderson coming back down to earth and Lehner doing well once every 2 games and Zibanejad/MacArthur looking like you best forwards.

Meh.

Well we know that Spezza and Ryan are under performing. So I expect the offense will get better. Yea their D sucks no doubt..

It was 6-5 in a shoot out in a road building! Until the penalties and missed goalie interference call it was all Leafs!

They're putting up points, no doubt. But the rest of their game is pretty pedestrian.

They took bad penalties. The Malkin goal was BS so it really should have been a leafs win. I realize the bad calls gave Pitts the momentum, but even Carlyle said they stopped skating in the third.

I agree but in no way should anyone be jumping off the bandwagon after that game.

offense is doing fine

Their defensive zone coverage is abysmal, as seen last night against the Canucks.

They have been brutally outshot in nearly every game. Maybe having Bolland and Bozak out of the lineup had something to do with that. I'm not jumping off the bandwagon and I never will, but changes need to be made. Too many bad passes through the neutral zone. Also they aren't playing nearly as physical as they were last year. I just want to see more consistency and stop blowing leads, or at least stop giving teams a chance late in the game.

Agreed. The change isn't Carlyle though.

They need more possession. Leafs are deadly off the rush, but can't seem to sustain pressure (Clarkson has been pretty darn good in that regard thankfully but he's one guy). Even the defense, with so many offensively minded guys you'd expect a bit more possession in the offensive zone.

Who would they even get if they did ax Carlyle?

Laviolette?
Carbonneau?

Maybe his style isn't the problem. Maybe getting them to play his style is. Also he makes some pretty questionable decisions like not ever putting Kadri in the SO, and not calling timeouts when they are getting slaughtered.

The defence have not been doing what's expected of them, especially offensively. Even Rielly needs to get more points. Gardiner has been a massive disappointment so far and Fanson is even struggling. I have no idea what I'd do if I were Carlyle... But I hope he figures it out soon.
