"I'm inclined to say that Steve Yzerman didn't have high hopes for his team, in deciding to keep Jonathan Drouin in Halifax and Brent Connolly in Syracuse for the beginning of the season."
You've got this backwards. Not bringing up young kids too early is a direct attempt at having a more competitive team. A tiny, teenaged Drouin is not a better third line option than a proper experienced NHL checking forward. He's still a kid. He needs to play top minutes be effective and it's much better for the current team and for his future development not to play him in the NHL.
It's when teams bring their youngsters up too early that they are not expecting to be competitive. errr tanking. Re: The Great Disgrace(aka Edmonton Oilers) - Njuice
First let me say I agree with your point
Bolts depth chart had as much with Drouin going back to Halifax as anything else. Panik, Killorn, Tyler Johnson, Palat, even JT Brown had spent the past 2 years in Norfolk/Syracuse earning their way to the bigs. Drouin had a great camp and in most other organizations would have made the club this year, however with our depth (#1 ranked prospect group) Yzerman and Co couldn't make a spot for everyone and Drouin was the "easy" choice and removed Drouin from the pressure of playing right out of the draft and the scoring predictions that were being tossed around.
Bolts learned the lesson having Connolly up straight out of juniors when he clearly wasn't ready. Drouin is showing to be a superior player in Halifax, but he isn't wasting his time either. He's been playing center this year (whereas last year he played wing with Mackinnon) which given the Bolts logjam on the wings could be helpful for the organization down the road and could very well be JD's future spot. Even if he stays at wing, having a little extra versatility later on can do no harm.
One more note regarding Drouin, at 6'1" 190 lbs he's not "tiny". In fact he is still growing but at 190 he's not a skinny runt.

Connolly went back to junior the year after he was drafted. |

It's so cute when Montreal and Ottawa fans band together to chirp the leafs. It's like two rival gangs putting aside their differences to bring down a fortune 500 company for the greater good of miserable Canadians everywhere. - PotvinFan

I know Engels will probably ban me (again) because I disagree and have stats to prove it, but how can Subban be the Habs "best defensive Defenceman" and have an average PK time of 0:44 seconds, which is only better than Nathan Beaulieu... who has 0?
http://www.nhl.com/ice/pl...erGame&viewName=timeOnIce
One would think, the best defensive defenceman would be used more in a defensive role.
--
I do think Subban should be on Team Canada, I think he is 80% and 20% defense, but so was Al MacInnis, he turned out alright. |

No more blackouts? Thats fantastic news - the_cause2000
So that's why Rogers only donated a measly thousand dollars to my city's local charity for christmas the empty stocking fund. They had 5.2 billion dollars going towards hockey games.
It didn't look THAT bad though.
Tim Hortons donated 40 grand
Irving donated 20 grand
And students at a local high school donated 1500 by donating spare change they had for the last 2 months.
If that weren't enough, this was the first year the telethon had commercials and because it was on a rogers channel, every commercial was for rogers products

Coach decision, Subban gets the most ice time at 5 on 5 and the PP, he has been solid in that role. He is an offensive D, that's for sure. His defensive coverage has improved A LOT in the past year, he is no longer a liability, he is developing into a very solid D with lots of offense.
Probably the best skating D on the Canadian squad, he will be on the team....big ice requires great skaters. |

Wait, being ahead in the standings is irrelevant in hockey? Cool! So they're playing for something more abstract, then? Like posterity, or general goodwill? - oniremosewa
Considering that this is the end of November, then yes, it is irrelevant. Just so you know, playoffs begin in April and the cup is handed out a couple of months after that. |

Worst company to have ownership of all of the hockey games. They said CBC would keep HNIC. HA that'll list all of a year or two. |

they could of donated nothing
to think that any corporation does things out of the 'goodness' of their hearts makes me laugh.
Every corporation has a responsibility to the share holder. Donating money is simply a way they market themselves in order to get exposure and endear their products to people's hearts

So time on the Penalty Kill = a teams best Defensive Dman
I always thought you put the players that were rested and won't be missed when the kill is done. Not being a liability defensively is a good thing but anyone can be taught to stand in a square and get in the way of a shooting lane.
But i guess you have to be the best player on your team to play on the pk. |

Well if you are the best "defensemen" I would hope you are out on the ice in defensive situations like the penalty kill or the end of the game. Subban is an excellent player but it was a joke that he won the Norris over guys like Weber, Suter, even Keith. Those guys play in every situation, always against the top competition. |

It's hard to navigate through the bullpoop for this new deal since Rogers and Bell own most of the media in this country it's hard to get an objective opinion or true analysis on the matter.
My understanding is that on certain nights you can watch whatever game you want, however, I also heard a guy on Sportsnet say they are planning on putting in "mini" game center packages for the Canadian teams. If you read and listen to what they are saying, the words "regional blackouts will not be FURTHER implemented" meaning they are not necessarily being entirely uplifted.
Anyone have a reliable objective review of the deal? |
