Realistically what sort of return do you expect from a potential Dion Trade...just a 1st rounder? Its a tough guess at this point
I dont see a lot of teams wanting to pony up a lot than that for him since they do would have to resign him to make a big trade package worth it, and plus if they do resign him around 6.5-7 a season, that is a lot to give up for him in assets and cap space. - DDM-Coga
I think Leafs would expect around the same return as Buffalo got for Vanek. |

Something like the Bouwmeester return.
A first and a couple of B prospects. |

yeah thats the right example here, real value is the 1st, if you are at the deadline and think you have a legit shot, burning a 1st isnt the worst thing.
But are the leafs a better team with or without him if they are playoff bound as well? Would they want to move him if they are back in the dance |

Really depends on how you evaluate your team and your odds of winning the cup.
What good will it do to keep Phaneuf, make it to the second round, lose then lose him to the free market?
If you feel you have a real shot at the cup, sure, keep him, hell gamble all the way for a rental! |

Cuz he would fetch the biggest return then. Ideally they should trade him, like now.... It'll give the rest more time to adjust for the playoffs. |

If you stay top 5 in the conference, you have to go for a run IMO. |

The return part is true. But we'd be taking a step backwards. We need to go for a run now, in case we do lose guys like franson, bolland etc. next year. |

I disagree. For a team that's missed the playoffs for 9 of the last 10 seasons, is young and improving/building, that is ready to compete within the conference, it sends a horrible message to the fans and team to trade him. The Leafs need to keep building on their recent limited success, not look to take a step back. |

I agree, that's what I think the Leafs should do, even if they're not cup favorites.
But then again, I still think that in the long run, Leafs would be better off spending that 7M per year on another player than Phaneuf. |

Not quite. Coaches, Gm's and fans a like love goal scoring at the deadline. Its much easier to compute and justify what it will do for your team short term. |

I think there is no "message" sent other than he is not worth the cap hit.
I can't see how anyone could seriously believe it is because MLSE is too cheap.

I agree with this, I think the Leafs are just as ready to win the cup as any team in the league. Would there be challenges? Sure. Are there other teams right now that are bigger favorites(favourites)? Yes. I think as a team they need to play strong through the new year and prove they are worth the investment of keeping Dion. |

I don't think there is much choice other than keeping him.
Certainly downsides to Phaneuf and he's not my favorite Leaf captain, but his impact is huge for that team. He's managed to continue shutting down the top offensives threats in the league. Lot of reasons the Leafs have continued having success and one of them is certainly Phaneuf.
Would be tough to give into his ideal demands, but if you can work that number down and still get a deal done then do it. No matter when you made the deal the defensive game would seriously sink and no one on that blueline could replace those minutes.
It may go right to July 1st, but I'd be surprised if Phaneuf was gone. Certainly can't imagine them moving him no matter how negotiations are going near the deadline. |

I don't know if this has been suggested before but the Leafs should offer 7 years at $3.5 million right after they sign Elisha to a 7 year endorsement deal at $3.5M per.

If he wants a long term contract offer him an 8 year deal for $50M and front load the crap out of it.
9, 8, 8, 6, 6, 6, 4.5, 4.5
Or something like that.
You never know. |

Phaneuf will be re-signed long term. And in a way I agree with the fact that "He's not the same player he was when scored XX goals in his first three years in category". He is much, much better. This is probably the best hockey he's ever played in his life. Time and time again he makes good defensive plays. A little stick lift here. A little dump out off the glass, etc. etc. The game is played on the ice, not on the stats sheet. But if you need a stat, take a look at his amazing +/- |
