Dear Eklund,

Phaneuf is not despised by anyone over here. Not sure where you got that one

- bobbyflex

Dear Bobby,

The article is not written by Eklund but by Mike Aguello the Leafs blogger....and yes Phaneuf is despised around the league....

Letting Phaneuf go will definitely come back to haunt the Leafs. Him and Gunner have been really good this year. As for the Leafs being outshot every game this has nothing to do with him. Watch the games and you will see they just like to pass pass pass all the time and often they turnover the puck doing so which results in a shot(s) for the other team. If they could somehow magically get him to sign for 6 mill a year it would be a good deal.

For any of those who think Franson is ready to take some of Dion's minutes they should realize that most of our Shots Against have come with those 2 on the ice. By far the most.

Well take a guess for cryin out loud, this is all just theory and suppose to be for fun....no?

See I think Cup teams clearing salary for ELC makes perfect sense. If you end up trying to keep all your vets you run into the problem the Canucks and Mike Gillis have. An aging downhill sliding team, that's why they should let Phaneuf walk and give a bigger role to the younger players. Allows them to keep and sign some important guys.

- LeftCoaster

The point isn't keeping ALL your vets, but the ones you feel are the most important for your clubs success...no?

The Leafs are an aging downhill sliding team, so they should let Phaneuf walk? Now you're really reaching...

How nobody has even mentioned Fuji is beyond me. By far, the best apple out there.

The best Fuji out there is the one who worked for Super Dave Osborne.

Simply put, Dion is not worth anything over what he currently gets paid. He shouldnt be paid as a top 5 five dman in the league.
He cant even crack Team Canada's line up.

is he just so-so average? Im not getting the protest
- Arctic_AARDVARK

I don't think he's average at all. I think he has been a big part of Dion's success at shutting down the opposition.

Neither can Kris Letang and he's making 56m. Using Team Canada as a measuring bar is pretty silly.

i actually disagree with this. Only because we have depth at centre, even though we don't have a #1. We'd get killed if you took dion away and didn't replace him.
- clark_griswold

We would also do some killing of our own if we landed say... Mike Richards, Kopitar, J. Staal etc. I know i know, I just can't let it go.

Agreed. He'll make 6 great little plays then fumble the puck once and he's useless all of a sudden.

2nd most.

Seriously though, you can't compare an old declining team like the Canucks to the young up and cumming Leafs. They're polar opposites of each other.

Me too.

Maybe we can smoke enough to the point we can agree the Leafs should let Dion walk and pay Bolland 5 million per for 30 years.

He isn't a top pairing guy, who plays extremely reserved to make it work. At 3+ million, there's better options available for the price.

He's maybe a step above mediocre.. But factor in his experience and injury problems he falls back to average.. but thats just me. i think Rielly is next Salming but im biased

Especially when Bouwmeester has sucked dong for years, and now that he's a Blue, he's Bobby Orrs flawless stunt double. For a nation that prides itself on their hockey knowledge and expertise, they make some really stupid and idiotic decisions. Like, for example, inviting goalies who used to be good, but aren't now, but hey....why the (frank) not? They have experiencesesess!

Well Letang was injured for awhile and is far better than Dion.
