we have 2.5 mil coming off the books (buyout/ retained salary) If Phaneuf gets 7, that means we got both Kessel/Phaneuf locked up with only an extra 0.6 million per. I expect one of Franson/Gardiner to be moved, as both will be looking for big raises. We have one of the most dynamic young d-men in the league (Rielly) so one of those guys might be expendable - GardinerExpress
You need 6 defensemen. Just because you add one good one doesn't mean one of your other 3 good ones is expendable. |

Didn't the article say he was going to start off asking for 7 years and $50M? Come back to reality. - isles10289

Giving up 40 to 50 shots a game someone's not doing their job defensively, trade that bum while he's worth something! - LeftCoaster
and here they are. We love giving up 40-50 shots, especially when we look at the standings afterwards.
Funny how other teams fans were telling us Burke is ruining our team, and phaneuf stinks. Weird. |

If Nonis re-signs Pha'goof, even at the same $6.5 M you can kiss Franson goodbye. They are better building around Franson & Reilly. I would rather see the upcoming prospects in the lineup 2-3 years from now, than to see them get traded off because of Pha'goofs huge contract. |

So... Bolland will get 3+, Franson on the open market 4+, Gardner 1.5+, Fraser 2+, Raymond 3+, Reimer 5+ especially if he holds a top 10 save for the second season in a row, and on and on... There simply isn't room to pay a top 20 to 30 guy 7 million, sorry Dion is a 5.5 million dollar d man anyway. |

Calling him Pha'goof (twice) really just makes you look silly - not him. |

IMO, Burke should have never been fired. Like i said earlier Phaneuf is not flashy, he is just very steady.
How much of those shots are a result of forwards that cannot posses the puck and cause turnovers? (Much like the problem Buffalo is having) |

Its RC style, shots from the outside and clear the rebounds, but 50 shots isn't what he wants, and lately they are letting too many from in close. |

It would be interesting to see what his offensive numbers would be if he was playing against the 2nd line or 3rd line guys like he was in Calgary. - robe0489
For the most part he was hammering the puck from the point on the pp racking up points there ... But I agree having him as a second pairing guy helped him a lot too |

Only according to Leaf fans....
Most projections are in the 66-67 mill range... |

Bolland will get 3+, Franson possibly 4+ on open market. Gardiner sounds about right. Fraser can go somewhere else for over 2 and Raymond can (and will) move on if it takes 3+ to sign him. Reimer at 5+??? Won't be in Toronto. |

he'll sign and he'll get what HE wants... Trade isn't going to happen as someone will have to pay on Dion's terms and the asking price will b higher that 90% of teams (could) pay. He's not spectacular but he's good. Signing him is the best option the Leafs have, painful as 7 mill would be... |

Pretty much agree.
I think Fraser is gone regardless. I love MacWilliam and think he makes the team next year in Fraser's spot. |

So as of today the best save in the league walks? That would be so dumb. Reimer is the real deal one of the best in the league. Bernier has let in a weak goal each of his last 5 games. If they choose Bernier over Reimer they are nuts. But it is TO so... |

this is a brutal position for the Leafs. they need Phaneuf, but they're gonna fall victim to his current contract. he won't take a pay cut, and frankly, he shouldn't. but it's unlikely Toronto can replace him, and given Nonis is in win-now mentality, he's got to bring Phaneuf back. i see him getting the same cap hit on a 6-8 year deal. |

If we trade him at the deadline, there's a pretty good chance we don't even make the playoffs. Those poll numbers have to be mostly Trolls + leaf fans who don't actually pay attention. - PotvinFan
I, actually pay attention, to practically every game they play. Phaneuf's return could be HUGE from a contending team in need. If we trade him at the deadline and/or sign a stop gap veteran defender, and spread out Dions minutes amongst our D, there's a good chance we make the playoffs with a new roster player and a high end prospect, AND cap space. He might be our best defender, but he's not our only quality guy on the back end that can eat minutes. Why are most Leaf fans afraid to take chances? Every move a GM makes, or doesn't make, is a crap shoot. Myself, I'd rather sign Bolland long term, for MUCH less than what Dion is going to command. Get a high return for him now ! JMHO. |
